Most projects use durable cotton (easy to wash, heat-tolerant) and work up with small amounts of yarn, so they’re ideal for stash-busting and charity projects too.

Crochet for Kitchen Materials, Care & Tips

  • Best yarns: 100% non-mercerized cotton for anything that contacts heat or hot cookware. Avoid acrylic/polyester near heat. Never put anything that’s not made of cotton in the microwave.
  • Hook sizes: typically, 4.0mm (G) to 5.5 mm (I-9) crochet hooks. You rarely need to match a specific stitch tension, so the hook size is often forgiving for home and kitchen crochet projects.
  • Care instructions: Machine wash and dry when made with cotton; reshape and lay flat if needed. Follow the instructions on the yarn label for more information.
  • Craft market and gift tip: Bundle sets, like three dishcloths, a scrubby, and a handmade soap bar, and tie them with baker’s twine.

Kitchen Crochet Projects FAQ’s

What yarns work best for kitchen projects?

100% cotton (or cotton blends) for absorbency and heat tolerance. Acrylic and polyester are not ideal for near heat – they can easily melt.

What about yarn for dish scrubbies?

Cotton works well for dish scrubbies. But my favorite is Red Heart Scrubby yarn – it’s ideal for cleaning pots and pans.

How do I care for finished crochet kitchen items?

Following the care instructions on the yarn label is the best approach. However, most cotton yarns can be machine-washed in cold or warm water and tumble-dried on a low setting or laid flat. Avoid using fabric softener on dishcloths, as it reduces absorbency.

Best practices for selling kitchen sets at markets or for gifts?

People love a cute gift set! Combine 2–3 washcloths, 1 scrubby, and a bar of homemade soap. Attach a printed craft tag with care instructions.
