How to Crochet a Heart Coaster
This quick crochet heart coaster pattern is very simple to make and uses very basic stitches. The secret to make the heart shape is by making one increase on one end and a decrease on the other end of the heart. Keep scrolling for the full instructions, but here are the basic steps:
- Firstly, you’ll make a foundation with 44 chains and crochet the first row of 3 double crochet cluster stitches.
- Secondly, you’ll crochet round 2. But this time going around the foundation chains and keep making clusters of 3 double crochet stitches.
- Thirdly, you’ll crochet round 3. But now you’ll make a full round of plain double crochet stitches.
- Next, you’ll crochet another full round of plain double crochet stitches.
- Then, you’ll crochet edging with a shell stitch consisting of 7 double crochet stitch to form a “fan” shape.
- And lastly, you’ll add the “cherry on top” by making a round of single crochet stitches around the shells.
Reasons To Love this Crochet Heart Coaster
- Easy and quick – this the perfect small project when you’re looking for something to make in less than an hour.
- Practical – coasters are not only great small projects, but they are amazing additions and useful to protect your tables from drink spills.
- Stash buster – got cotton yarn leftovers in your stash? This is your opportunity to use it.
- Gifts – make a few of these coasters to gift someone on Valentine’s Day or any other occasion.
Pattern Variations & Usage
This crochet heart coaster will make adorable drink coasters for your coffee or dinner tables. However, by simply modifying the yarn weight and hook size, it’s possible to make it for other purposes as well.
Here are a few ideas:
- Make doilies – use thicker yarns to make mini doilies. In addition, if you’re comfortable doing the math, start your foundation with 64 chains and add an extra round to the pattern to make it into a larger doily.
- Bookmarks – use lace yarn or thread to make miniature hearts that can be used as bookmarks. This would make an amazing Valentine’s Day little gift to friends or classmates.
- Goodie bags – make two pieces, attach them together and add a handle to create a cute heart bag. Then, fill them with goodies or a gift card for a loved one.
- Table runner – another idea is to make several hearts and attach them together to make a table runner.
Skills You’ll Need
This crochet heart coaster pattern uses basic stiches only. Which will make it suitable for crocheters that are comfortable reading crochet patterns in US terms. Here are the instructions for the main stitches used:
- Chain (ch) – with your hook inserted in the current loop, yarn over and pull up a loop.
- Double crochet (dc) – yarn over, insert the hook in next stitch, yarn over again, pull up a loop, (yarn over pull through two) twice to complete the stitch.
- Shell – this stitch will be used for the edging and consists of a cluster of 7 double crochet stitches in the same stitch, as instructed in the pattern.
- Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog) – insert the hook in next stitch, (yarn over and pull up a loop) two times, when you have three loops on hook, yarn over and pull through all three to complete the stitch.
Easy Crochet Heart Coaster Pattern
This crochet heart coaster pattern uses US crochet terminology.
Level of difficulty: Intermediate, but doable by an advanced beginner who’s comfortable reading long pattern instructions.
Materials
- Super Fine (#1) or Fine (#2) yarn.
- 2.00 mm (2/0) Tulip Etmo crochet hook.
- Stitch Marker (optional, but super helpful).
- Tapestry Needle – you’ll use it to weave in your ends after finishing.
Best Yarn for This Crochet Coaster
My favorite yarns for crochet coasters are cotton or cotton blends. Any weight between Super Fine (#1) and Worsted weight (#4) will work great. You’ll need approximately 60 yds (55 m).
Yarn recommendation:
- Option 1: Super Fine (#1) / Fingering – I used 100% Mercerized Cotton Aunt Lydia Fashion 3 in Color Red.
- Option 2: Fine (#2) – I used Premier Cotton Fair Yarn (cotton and acrylic blend) in color Blush. And a small amount in color Coral.
Pattern Notes
- Gauge is not crucial for this pattern. But as a reference, the first 3 rounds will be approximately 6.5” (16 cm) wide and 2” (5 cm) tall. Considering you’ll use a 2.00 mm hook and Super Fine (#1) yarn.
- The finished size of the project will be 8” (20.5 cm) wide x 5” (12.5 cm) tall (across the center) with Super Fine (#1) yarn. But if you use Fine (#2) yarn, it will add about 1” (2.5 cm) to that size.

Instructions
Start with 44 chains to make a crochet heart coaster about 9″ (23 cm) wide. Then, do all stitches in row 1 in the back bump of each chain.
Row #1
dc in 5th ch from hook, dc in next 2 chs, (ch 2, sk 2 chs, dc in next 3 chs) 2 times, ch 2, sk 2 chs, dc in next 2 chs, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch to make the peak, dc in next 2 chs, (ch 2, sk 2 chs, dc in next 3 chs) 3 times, you now have 5 chs left, sk 4 chs, sl st in last ch, this is the end of row 1.
Crochet Tip: When you have long instructions such as these, a stitch marker will be very helpful to track your stitch repeats. Place it in the first or last stitch in each repeat and move it forward as you start the next repeat.
Round #2
R2: ch 4, do not turn, keep going around on the opposite side of the foundation chs, (dc, ch 2) in next ch sp 5 times, (sk next 3 sts, dc 3 in next ch sp, ch 2) 2 times, sk next 3 sts, dc 3 in next ch sp.
Then, sk next 5 sts to make the valley, (dc 3 in next ch sp, ch 2, sk next 3 sts) 3 times, (dc, ch 2) in next ch sp 5 times, plus 1 dc in same sp, (ch 2, sk 3 sts, dc 3 in next ch sp) 3 times, ch 2, sk 3 sts, (dc 3, ch 3, dc 3) in next ch sp to make the peak, (ch 2, sk 3 sts, dc 3 in next ch sp) 3 times, ch 2, sl st to initial ch 2 to join.
Note: for the next 2 rounds, you will do plain dc sts all around.
Round #3
ch 2 (doesn’t count as a dc), dc in same st as ch 2, (dc 2 in next ch sp, dc in next dc st) 5 times, (dc 2 in next ch sp, dc in next 3 dc sts) 2 times, dc 2 in next ch sp, sk next 6 sts to make the valley, (dc 2 in next ch sp, dc in next 3 dc sts) 2 times.
Then, (dc 2 in next ch sp, dc in next dc st) 6 times, (dc 2 in next ch sp, dc in next 3 dc sts) 4 times, (dc 3, ch 3, dc 3) in next ch sp to make the peak, (dc in next 3 dc sts, dc 2 in next ch sp) to the end, sl st in initial dc st to join. You’ll have a total of 102 dc sts and 1 ch sp.
Round #4
ch 2 (doesn’t count as a dc), dc in same st as ch 2, (dc 2 in next st, dc) 12 times, sk 6 sts to make the valley, (dc, dc 2 in next sts) 12 times.
Then, dc to next ch sp, (dc 3, ch 1, dc 3) in next ch sp to make the peak, dc to the end, sl st in initial dc st to join. At the end of this round, you’ll have 126 dc sts and 1 ch sp.
Edging
R5 (RS): *(sk 2 sts, shell in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st)* 6 times, when you’re done with 6th shell you should have 3 sts left before the valley, sk 2 sts and sc2tog in next 2 sts, rep instructions between asterisks 15 more times. FO. Cut the yarn.
Finishing touch (optional)
For the pink crochet heart coaster, I used a darker pink yarn to add a round of sc sts around the edging. In the sc sts between the shells, make an extended sc st by inserting the hook in the st in row below the last. FO. Cut the yarn. Weave in all ends.
