Handmade crochet towels adorned with heart motifs also make thoughtful gifts for special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, anniversaries, and birthdays. They’re the kind of gift that’s both beautiful and functional—always a win.

I designed this pattern to be as fun to make as it is pretty to display. It features adorable hearts created with tapestry crochet, a colorwork technique in which you crochet with multiple yarn colors while carrying the unused strands under the stitches.

To make things even easier, I’ve included a color chart for visual learners, so you can enjoy the process from start to finish.

The pattern consists of turning rows, and the repeat is rows 13-22. If you’re wondering whether you can crochet your cloth smaller, the answer is yes. Just start the foundation with a multiple of 10.

For example, to make four heart motifs in a row instead of five, start the foundation with 50 chains rather than 60.

Let’s dive into the pattern details, material list, and all the information you need to complete the project. But before you scroll down…

Key Tips Before You Start:

  • Carrying the yarn: Carry the unused yarn on the rows with motifs only.
  • Changing colors: complete the last loop of the last single crochet stitch with the new color and drop the previous yarn.
  • Keeping the stitches consistent: when carrying the unused yarn, pull it gently as you go to keep it even, but not too tight.
  • Finishing touches: You’ll have quite a few ends to weave in; make sure to do it neatly. Also, when completed, use a steam iron to press your crochet dishcloth.

Row 2-12: sc across, ch 1, and turn.
Now, we start creating the motif with pink and purple. For that, we need to carry the unused yarn under the sts as we go for each of the next rows, until instructed otherwise.
Row 13: *sc 9 with MC, sc 1 with C2, rep from the asterisk 4 more times until 9 sts left, sc 9 with MC, ch 1 and turn.

Maggie’s Pro Tip: Pull and adjust the yarn you’re carrying with your fingers as you go, checking the back of the work often to ensure it doesn’t tangle between the stitches.

Row 14: sc 8 with MC, *sc 3 with C2, sc 7 with MC, rep from the asterisk 4 more times until 8 sts left, sc 8 with MC, ch 1 and turn.
Row 15: sc 7 with MC, *sc 5 with C2, sc 5 with MC, rep from the asterisk 3 more times until 10 sts left, sc 5 with C2, sc 7 with MC, ch 1 and turn.

Row 17-18: sc 6 with MC, *sc 7 with C2, sc 3 with MC, rep from the asterisk 3 more times until 13 sts left, sc 7 with C2, sc 6 with MC, ch 1 and turn. Cut color two and continue to the next row with MC only.
Row 19: sc 8, *sc 3 in the 4th C2 sc st two rows below, sk 3 sts, sc 7, rep from the asterisk 4 more times (the last sequence ends with 8 sc sts), ch 1 and turn.
Row 20-22: sc across, ch 1, and turn.
Rows 23-74: Repeat rows 13 to 22. At the end of row 74, do not cut the yarn yet; ch 1 and continue crocheting the edging.

Creating the border

This border is very simple: you’ll crochet one round of sc, one round of shell sts (5 dc sts), then with C2 or C3 sl st in blo of every dc and do an extented sc st on top of very sc, inserting the hook two rows below.

Crochet rows 1 and 2 with MC, and row 3 with C2 or C3.

Row 1 (RS): sc across row 74, then continue to sc around the towel, making 2 sc sts in each of the 4 corners, join to the first sc with a sl st.
Row 2 (RS): *sc, sk 2 sts (sk 1 st on the corners), dc 5 in next st, sk one st (sk 1 st on the corners), rep from the asterisk around. Cut the yarn and FO.

Maggie’s Pro Tip: when sc edging on a turning-row project such as this one, on the sides or turning ends of each row, do one sc st for every sc post.

Row 3 (RS): attach pink or purple, then * sl st in blo of every dc st, extended sc two rows below (on top of the sc st).

Finishing the dishcloth
