DIY Ideas for These Crochet Stars
These crochet stars are the ideal DIY yarn project for small decorations. Not only are they quick and easy to crochet, but you can also use your favorite yarn colors to match your personal style. Here are some ideas for using them:
- String several stars on a jute cord to create a crochet star bunting for your mantel or windows.
- Just like the bunting, you can also make a vertical garland to decorate themed parties and outdoor spaces.
- Add a loop with craft cord to make ornaments or keychains.
- Use them as gift toppers or simply as small, last-minute gifts for special occasions.
How to Crochet a Star
This crochet star pattern is worked in the round using just three rounds of stitches. It’s as simple as that.
First, make twenty stitches in a magic circle. Alternatively, create a ring using four chains and place the first round of stitches in the ring.
Next, create the second round by placing seven double crochet shells, alternating with single crochet stitches.
Lastly, crochet the third round to create the star points. This step is a bit more intricate, but I have included plenty of step-by-step photos and a chart below to guide you through it.
Free Crochet Star Pattern
This pattern uses standard USA Crochet Terms.
Skill level: Easy.
Finished star measurement: 4 inches (10 cm).
Stitch tension isnโt crucial for this crochet star pattern. However, changing the yarn weight will result in a smaller or larger star.

- Worsted weight (4) yarn: I used several leftovers from my stash, including 24/7 by Lion Brand (which, by the way, has beautiful colors!). One star takes about 12 yards (11 m).

- Tapestry needle to weave in the ends
- Scissors

- ch(s): chain(s)
- dc: double crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- mc: magic circle
- rep: repeat
- sc: single crochet

- yo: yarn over
Crochet Star Instructions
Step 1
Round #1: Create a magic circle, chain 3 (doesnโt count as a double crochet stitch) plus 19 double crochet stitches in the magic circle, slip stitch into the first stitch to join.
Tip: As an alternative to the magic circle, you can chain 4, then slip stitch to the fourth chain from the hook to create a ring. Then, place the first round into the ring.
Step 2
Round #2: Skip one stitch, then place seven double crochet stitches into the next stitch to create the first shell.
Skip another stitch and single crochet into the next stitch.
Repeat the two previous steps four more times. There is no need to use a slip stitch to join after creating the last single crochet stitch.
Step 3
Round #3: *Single crochet into the first stitch, then one half double crochet stitch in each of the next two stitches.
Then, do the following into the fourth stitch of the shell:
- double crochet, chain 4, insert the hook into the back bump of the third chain from the hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, two loops on the hook.
- Skip one chain, insert the hook again into the back bump of the next stitch on top of the last double crochet stitch, three loops on hook.
- Yarn over, pull through all three loops to complete a two-single-crochet-together stitch (sc2tog), and another double crochet stitch.
Next, create one half double crochet stitch in each of the next two stitches, single crochet, slip stitch into the next single crochet stitch,
Repeat from the asterisk four more times, then slip stitch to finish this last round.
Step 4
This is optional, but you can use the crochet star pattern above to create multiple stars. Then, cut a length of craft string, such as a jute cord, and thread the stars together to form a bunting.
Your star is complete. I hope you had fun working on this free crochet star pattern.
