I love how special it is to give a gift to someone that is not only thoughtful — but handmade, too. With the holiday season approaching, I was excited to create something for my friends and family that was festive, elegant, and cozy. That’s how this beautiful wine bottle holder came to life.
I started the bag with a sturdy base made using yarn under single crochet stitches, giving it a clean and structured look. From there, the body transitions into soft front and back post half double crochets, which create a beautiful, ribbed texture — almost like a knit stocking wrapped snugly around your favorite holiday wine.
I then added a drawstring that can be tied into a charming bow around the bottle’s neck. But the real showstopper? A bright red, cheerful crochet poinsettia flower tied to one end of the drawstring, adding just the right festive flourish. It’s delicate, ornamental, and totally gift-worthy for a dear host— the kind of detail that makes your recipient pause and smile before they even untie the bow.
The red cherry RHSS yarn I used in this wine bottle holder is my favorite red yarn for Christmas crochet projects. I previously used it to create one of my Crochet Elf Hats.
Whether you’re heading to a holiday party or want to make a unique gift for someone special, this wine bottle holder bag is quick and fun to make. Grab your yarn and hook, and let’s start crocheting!

Poinsettia Crochet Wine Bottle Cozy Pattern
Materials, Tools & Notions
- Worsted weight (4) red yarn – I used approximately 130 yards (119 m) of Red Heart Super Saver in Cherry Red, or RHSS in Paddy Green, or RHSS Gold.
- A small amount of yellow yarn for the center of the flower
- 4.00mm/G hook for the sleeve or hook size to achieve gauge
- 3.50mm/E hook for the poinsettia flower
- Stitch marker, tapestry needle, and scissors
Finished Project Size
The crocheted bottle sleeve will be approximately 10.5 inches (26.5 cm) tall and 10¼ inches in circumference. It snugly fits standard 750 ml wine bottles, which measure 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter and 11 ¾ inches (30 cm) tall.

- sc: single crochet (use the “yarn under” single crochet stitch for the body of the wine bottle cozy bag)

Stitch Tension
A circle with the first seven rounds of the pattern should measure approximately 3 ¼ inches (8 cm) in diameter, measured across the center. If it’s much smaller, it means your stitch tension is too tight. You’ll need to switch to a bigger hook.

Poinsettia Wine Bottle Cozy FAQ’s
-
What size wine bottles does this cozy bag fit?
The finished bag, when made with the recommended yarn weight and hook size, fits standard bottle sizes snugly (750ml wine bottles).
-
Can I use different yarn weights for this pattern?
This wine bottle cozy was designed for medium-weight yarns and a 4.00 mm (G) hook. The base circle can be adjusted by adding rounds with multiples of six stitches. Unless you’re comfortable changing the base size by adding extra rounds, I do not recommend using lighter or heavier yarns, as they may affect the fit and structure of the bag.
-
Is this crochet bottle holder beginner-friendly?
No, this is a project for crocheters with some basic skills. I would call it an intermediate level of difficulty. The stitches used are single crochet, front/back post half double crochet, double crochet, and chains.
-
Do I have to include the poinsettia flower?
Not necessarily. The flower is optional. You can leave this crochet wine bottle cozy plain, with just the drawstring bow, but the flower adds a decorative touch and makes it unique. Alternatively, you can add a pom-pom or other embellishments if you prefer.
-
Can I sell finished cozies made from this pattern?
Definitely! I allow makers to sell items from all my patterns. The only thing I ask (but it’s not a requirement) is to give design credit to me when listing or sharing online.
-
Can I use this cozy for other bottles or items?
You definitely can. The size is fairly standard compared to other bottles and cans, like olive oil bottles, candles, and coffee cups. By adding some extra rounds (or fewer rounds) to the bottom circle and the body of the holder bag, you can make any other cozy you like (the bottom circle has 6 stitches per round).
