Materials, Tools & Notions
- Worsted weight (4) red yarn – I used approximately 130 yards (119 m) of Red Heart Super Saver in Cherry Red, or RHSS in Paddy Green, or RHSS Gold.
- A small amount of yellow yarn for the center of the flower
- 4.00mm/G hook for the sleeve or hook size to achieve gauge
- 3.50mm/E hook for the poinsettia flower
- Stitch marker, tapestry needle, and scissors
Finished Project Size
The crocheted bottle sleeve will be approximately 10.5 inches (26.5 cm) tall and 10¼ inches in circumference. It snugly fits standard 750 ml wine bottles, which measure 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter and 11 ¾ inches (30 cm) tall.

Instructions
Step 1: Crochet Wine Bottle Cozy’s Body (Red)
Use a 4.00mm/G hook for the bag. Before you begin, you may find these resources helpful: how to create a magic circle, how to do an invisible finish in crochet, and how to crochet a perfect circle.
Tip: Crochet continuous rounds of yarn under sc sts up to round 39 to have “x” look sts (optional).
Round #1: sc 6 in mc
Round #2: inc 6x. [12]
Round #3: (inc, sc) 6x. [18]
Round #4: sc, (inc, sc 2) 5x, inc, sc. [24]
Round #5: (inc, sc 3) 6x. [30]
Round #6: sc 2, (inc, sc 4) 5x, inc, sc 2. [36]
Round #7: (inc, sc 5) 6x. [42]
Round #8: bpsc around [42]
Size Tip: The bag should be approximately 8 ¼ inches (21 cm) tall at this point. You can add or remove sc rounds if it’s significantly shorter or taller.
Round #9-38: sc around [42]
Round #39: ch 3 (counts as a hdc st and a ch 1 s sp), *sk one st, hdc in next st, ch 1, rep from the asterisk around, sl st to initial ch 2 to join. [21 ch 1 sp]
Round #40: ch 2, *hdc in next ch 1 sp, hdc in next hdc st, rep from the asterisk around, sl st to initial ch 2 to join. [42]
Round #41-45: ch 2, (fphdc, bphdc) around. Cut the yarn and FO.[42]
Step 2: Making the String
Ch 70, sl st into the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and into the back bump of every ch across. Cut the yarn and FO, then insert the string in round 39, weaving it in and out in every other ch 1 sp.
Step 3: Crocheting the Poinsettia Flower
Round #1: with yellow yarn and the 3.5mm/E hook, create a mc, ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), hdc 6 in the mc, sl st to join. Cut the yarn and FO.
Round #2: then switch to red, leaving a long tail to sew the flower to one of the ends of the string later, *ch 6, sl st in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st in each back bump of the next 4 chs, sl st in the same base st as ch 6 (doesn’t count as a st), sl st in the next st (doesn’t count as a st), rep from the asterisk 5 more times, sl st in the first ch (doesn’t count as a st) of the first set of 6 chs.
Round #3: *ch 2, dc in the same st as ch 2, dc in each of the next two sts, hdc in each of the next two sts, (hdc, ch 3, insert hook in back loops of next 2 chs, one at a time, pull up a loop in each, yo, pull through all loops on hook to create the point of the petal, hdc) in top turning ch, hdc in each of the next two sl sts. Dc in each of the next three sl sts, ch 2, sl st in the same st as the last dc, sl st in the hdc st two rounds below (from rnd 1), sl st in the first ch in the next set of 6 sts. Repeat from the asterisk 5 more times.
Step 4: Finishing touches
Attach the flower to one of the two ends of the drawstring or sew it onto the side of the crochet wine bottle cozy bag. Then, weave in all the leftover tails.

Can I use different yarn weights for this pattern?
This wine bottle cozy was designed for medium-weight yarns and a 4.00 mm (G) hook. The base circle can be adjusted by adding rounds with multiples of six stitches. Unless you’re comfortable changing the base size by adding extra rounds, I do not recommend using lighter or heavier yarns, as they may affect the fit and structure of the bag.

No, this is a project for crocheters with some basic skills. I would call it an intermediate level of difficulty. The stitches used are single crochet, front/back post half double crochet, double crochet, and chains.

Do I have to include the poinsettia flower?
Not necessarily. The flower is optional. You can leave this crochet wine bottle cozy plain, with just the drawstring bow, but the flower adds a decorative touch and makes it unique. Alternatively, you can add a pom-pom or other embellishments if you prefer.
