I know how mason jars are trendy right now, so these sleeves are also perfect for on-the-go teas, smoothies, and iced coffees. Whether you call them jar cozies, sleeves, or covers, you’ll love this project.

Giving old glass jars a new life is one of my favorite ways to add a handmade touch to my space while keeping things eco-friendly. I love to use them as mason jar vases, pencil holders, and even candle covers.

Additionally, this crochet jar sleeve is a fun and quick project — perfect for beginners and a great way to use up leftover yarn scraps.

About the Pattern

Crocheted on the round, from the bottom up, this crochet jar sleeve pattern begins with a sturdy circle that provides a solid foundation for the bottom of your jars.

The body of the sleeve features a two-round-repeat pattern, created using the crochet star stitch alternated with rounds of half double crochet stitches, which gives it a textured, floral-inspired look.

Besides the instructions for three different sizes, there is also an optional hanging loop, which is what sets this pattern apart. I highly recommend adding the hanging loop if you’re using it for on-the-go drinks or to display your mason jars on a hanging rack.

Gather your yarn, hook, and notions, and let’s begin transforming your empty jars into something beautiful and reusable!

Explaining the 1st star st in round# 2:

  • Then, insert hook into the back bump of the same ch and pull up another loop (3 loops on hook).
  • Pull up a loop in the same st as ch 2 and each of the next 2 sc sts (6 loops on hook), yo and pull through all 6 loops.
  • Ch 1 to lock in the st and create the eye of the star.

Remaining stars in round# 2 explained (until 1 st rem):

  • Insert hook in the eye of the current star and pull up a loop.
  • Insert hook into the blo of the last sc in the group of sc5tog in the previous star and pull up a loop.

Crocheting the last star and joining round# 2:

  • Insert hook into the back loop of the last sc in the group of sc5tog in the previous star and pull up a loop.

  • To join the round, insert the hook in the top two loops of the first star st, yo and draw up through all loops on the hook.
  • Chain 1 to create the eye of the last star, pull it to lock.

Round #3

Repeat rounds 2 and 3 to round 13 or to any other odd number of rounds to customize the height of the jar cozy. Cut the yarn. FO.

Finishing touch

Crochet two rounds of slip stitches in the last round of half double crochet stitches. Please don’t skip this step, as it helps reduce the stretchiness of the top edge. Cut the yarn. FO.

Hanging loop (optional)

Your crochet jar sleeve can be made without a hanging loop, though I’ve included this option for convenience when carrying drinks or hanging jars on a kitchen rack.

Row 1: Begin by attaching the yarn to one of the sl sts on the outside edge, then sc 3 (or more for a wider handle), ch 1, and turn.

Row 2-28: Sc in the 3 sts, ch 1 turn. Attach the end of the strap to the three corresponding sl sts in the inside row of the edge. Then, FO and weave in all the leftover tails.

Your crochet jar sleeve pattern is done. I hope you’ve created something beautiful.

Crochet Jar Sleeve Pattern FAQ

What size jars do these sleeves fit?

These jar cozies will fit jars measuring approximately 9″-10” (23-25 cm), 11″-12” (28-30 cm), and 13-14” (33-26 cm) in circumference. Ensure that you adjust your hook size as needed to achieve the correct stitch tension.

What type of yarn works best for this project?

These jar cozies work best with medium-weight yarn (4). Acrylic and cotton are suitable options, but if you plan to use your jars to store hot beverages, cotton is the best choice.

Can I use a different yarn weight to crochet these jar cozies?

You certainly can use a different yarn weight. However, it depends on your crochet skill level. If you feel comfortable adding more rounds to the bottom with the correct number of stitches, you can make this crochet jar sleeve with any yarn weight.

How do I adjust the pattern to fit a different jar size?

The bottom of the cozies is made with multiples of six stitches in each round. You can keep adding rounds with multiples of six stitches to increase the diameter if needed. For the height, repeat the two pattern rounds as many times as necessary to reach the desired size.
