What to use a Crocheted Snowflake for?
Crochet snowflakes are the perfect handmake items to bring some frosty style to your winter decoration. Here are some ideas on what to use them for:
- Doilies and coasters – use them to protect your tables or other surfaces from heat or humidity. Under plants and drinks, for example.
- Wall hanging – place it in an embroidery hoop and hand it on the wall.
- Garland or ornaments – if you make them with thread, they could be small enough to make a garland to decorate your mantel.
- Gifts – they are quick and easy to crochet, so they make adorable Christmas gifts to that loved one that appreciate handmade stuff.
- Blanket or tablecloth? – Yes, why not? This pattern is a perfect hexagon shape, so you can make several and sew them together to make a blanket or a tablecloth.
Supplies Needed for this Crochet Snowflake Pattern
- 4.00 mm (US G) crochet hook – or any other hook size that best suits your chosen yarn or thread.
- A tapestry needle – to weave in the leftover tails.
- Scissors – your usual pair of yarn scissors for cutting the yarn leftovers.
- Worsted weight (#4) yarn – or a lighter weight yarn if you want your snowflake to be smaller.
- Stitch marker (optional).
- Fabric Stiffener – if you want to make your crochet snowflake stiff (remember to use glue free stiffener if you don’t want it permanently stiffed).
- A washable blocking mat – if you’re making your snowflake stiff.
- Rust proof pins – to hold the crocheted snowflake in place while drying with the stiffener solution.
- A plastic or glass bowl – to dip the snowflake doily into if you’re using the fabric stiffener.
The Best Yarn for a Crochet Snowflake Pattern
I used 100% worsted weight (#4) yarn. This yarn thickness will give you a snowflake that’s a perfect doily size. However, if you want your snowflake to be small, use crochet thread instead.
I used I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby in color white, approximately 1.67 oz (47 g), or 86 yds (77 m). And a small amount of golden yarn (about 10 yds / 9 m) for the slip stitch edge, I used 24/7 by Lion Brand in color Goldenrod, this one is 100% mercerized cotton.
Can you use Acrylic Yarn a crochet snowflake?
Yes, acrylic yarn will be fine if you intend to use it as a doily for decoration only. However, if you intend to stiffen your snowflake with fabric stiffener, cotton yarn is the best option. And the reason why cotton is better, is because it will hold the stiff shape better than acrylic.
How to Make a Crochet Snowflake Stiff?
Here is what to know if you want to make your crochet snowflake pattern stiff:
- First, you will need a fabric stiffener that you can make yourself at home or you can purchase it already done. But remember, some fabric stiffeners have glue in them and will permanently make your snowflake stiff.
- Next, prepare your working surface, such as a craft table covered with a plastic tablecloth, since you will be using water. And gather your materials (see supplies list above)
- Then, prepare the stiffening solution and give your snowflake doily a bath, per package instructions.
- Lastly, pin it to the blocking board and let it dry.
