Design and Pattern Highlights

This crochet tee pattern features an oversized fit comprising two panels sewn at the sides and shoulders. Sounds easy, right? Wait until you see how quick it is to crochet.

When the seaming is done, we create the edgings to give the top a clean finish and add support to the stretchy stitch.

Itโ€™s also important to note that the model in the picture is 5 feet 6 inches tall and typically wears size S or M for tops. This will give you an idea of how oversized you want it to be. However, the pattern is easy to customize by adding or subtracting foundation stitches and panel rows.

What’s a drop-shoulder tee?

A drop shoulder is a style of crochet tee that is intentionally created with the armhole line “dropped” lower on the shoulder than that of a traditional top. This design creates a loose, slouchy fit, ideal for casual styles.

What yarns are best for this crochet tee pattern?

Medium-weight yarns composed of natural fibers, like cotton or cotton blend, are ideal for this boxy tee. Bamboo and rayon are also good fibers that add drape and are easy to work with.

Is this tee pattern easy for beginners?

Yes. This is a very beginner-friendly pattern created entirely with treble stitches. The design shaping comprises only two panels sewn together on the sides and shoulders.

Materials:

  • Medium weight (4) yarn โ€“ more on the yarn below.
  • 4 mm (G) hook or another size thatโ€™s needed to achieve the correct stitch tension.

Yarn Specifics:

The pictured tee was created using Caron Cotton Painterly Cake, a yarn composed of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic in the colorway Coral Cascade.

We are using a contrasting color for the edgings, and only a small amount is requiredโ€”approximately 40 to 60 yards, depending on the size.

Instructions

Front and Back Panels (x2)

Turning ch 4 wonโ€™t count as a stitch throughout the pattern.

Foundation: 68 (80, 94, 110, 124) chs or any other number of chs.

Tip: We donโ€™t have any multiples for this pattern. Meaning it can be started with any other number of chs for size adjustment if needed.

Row# 1: tr in back bump of 5th ch from hook and in back bump of every ch across, ch 4, turn.

Row# 2 to 22(24, 24, 26, 26): tr st across, ch 4, turn. 64 [76, 90, 106, 120] tr sts.

Side seam

Pair the two panels together and begin sewing. Since there is no right or wrong side in this crochet tee pattern, it doesnโ€™t matter which side is on the outside at this stage. However, the panels should be aligned in the same direction as the stitches were created.

Seaming tip: Any sewing method can be used for this top. However, I prefer the ladder (or mattress) stitch. Itโ€™s easy and helps to hide the stitches.

  • Start by threading the needle with a strand of yarn twice as long as the area needed sewn.
  • Then, align both panels side by side (the side you are sewing will be the right side of the top) and insert the needle into the corner of the panel to the left (right to wrong side).
  • Next, insert the needle into the corresponding stitch on the other panel. Make a knot to secure the strand of yarn.
  • Sew using the ladder stitch to row 11 (12, 12, 13, 13) from the right side of the fabric. There are no specific instructions as to where to insert the needle.  However, try to grab two stitch loops on each side of the panel and keep the rows aligned (see the photos below).
  • Do the same with the other side of the tee.

Shoulder seam

This is an off-the-shoulder crochet tee. However, the neckline seaming can be adjusted inward if desired.

Re-thread the needle with another strand of yarn and sew it with the ladder stitch method like in the previous step, sew 15 stitches on each shoulder side for all sizes.

A striped crochet panel

Neckline edging

Attach the contrasting color yarn to any stitch in the neckline on the right side of the fabric.

Round 1: sc around. In the corners, crochet 2sctog.

Round 2: sl st around. Fasten off and cut the yarn.

The slip stitch rounds on all the edges add support and remove some stretch. Please do not skip this step.

Armhole edging

We are doing the same we did for the neckline for the armholes. However, here weโ€™re crocheting the stitches along the crochet posts.

Start by attaching the contrasting color yarn to any stitch in the armhole on the right side of the fabric.

Round 1: sc 3 for each tr post around. In the underarm corners, crochet 2sctog.

Round 2: sl st around. Fasten off and cut the yarn.

A hand holding yarn and hook

Hem

Attach the contrasting color yarn to any stitch in the hem on the right side of the fabric.

Round 1: sc around.

Round 2: sl st around. Fasten off and cut the yarn. Weave in all the ends.

Thank you for following this crochet tee pattern. Remember to weave in all the ends neatly. I hope you had fun crocheting this oversized, trendy tee.
