How to Use These Lace Squares in Projects

Summer Tops & Cover-Ups: Create a breezy crop top, tank, or beach cover-up by making multiple daisy squares and joining them as you go.

Boho Bags & Accessories: Combine several squares to form the front and back of a drawstring bag or tote. You can enhance the boho vibe by adding fringe or tassels in complementary colors. Choose to line the bag for added stability or leave it unlined for a relaxed, slouchy mesh appearance.

Scarves & Wraps: Connect squares end-to-end to make a scarf, or use larger blocks to create an open-work crochet wrap. The openwork petals provide an airy fabric that is perfect for mild summer evenings.

Instructions

This lace daisy flower granny square step-by-step uses full, spelled out instructions to make it easy for beginners. Keep scrolling for the printable card with the instructions using abbreviations.

Round #1:

Create a magic circle with yarn color #1.

Then, chain 1 (won’t count as a stitch).

Half double crochet 12 and slip stitch to join.

Finish the round: Cut the yarn and fasten off using the invisible finish method for a cleaner finish.

Round #2:

Join the yarn color #2 to crochet the petals of the lace daisy flower granny square.

Then, *(single crochet, chain 16, single crochet) in the first stitch.

Repeat the instructions from the asterisk 11 more times.

Finish the round: Slip stitch to the first single crochet stitch to join, then cut the yarn and fasten off.

Tip: at round #2, it will be easy to accidentally skip the first single crochet stitch in the sequence of (sc, ch 16, sc). This would give us more stitches than we need, which is 12 “chain-16” spaces, or 12 petals.

Round #3:

Join the yarn color #3 on top of one of the petals.

Then, single crochet, *(chain 5, single crochet into the next chain 16 space).

Repeat from the asterisk around, slip stitch to the first single crochet to join.

Do not cut the yarn yet.

Round #4:

Continue with yarn color #3, then slip stitch into the next 3 chains.

Chain 4 – count as the first corner’s chain-1 space. Double crochet 3 into the same chain-5 space as the slip stitches.

*(Chain 5, single crochet into the next chain 5 space) 2 times.

Chain 5, (double crochet 3, chain 1, double crochet 3) into the next chain 5 space.

Repeat from the asterisk two more times, then (chain 5, single crochet into the next chain-5 space) 2 times.

Joining Method

The “join-as-you-go” is the best method for this Lace Daisy Flower Granny Square. Here is how you do it, starting at the second square for any project:

  • Start by creating three dc sts with a sc st at the chain one space on one of the corners of the opposite square.
  • Then, dc three again to complete the current corner and ch 2, sc on the corresponding ch-5 space on the opposite square, and sc into the next ch-5 space on the working square.
  • Repeat the previous step in a zig-zag movement for the side that is being joined to the next corner (see photo below).
