I experimented with multiple techniques at first, but nothing felt quite right until I tried a method known as “short rows.” From the very first stitch, I was hooked. It’s a bit unconventional and definitely more intricate than your everyday pattern, but that’s exactly what makes it so exciting to create.
The short-row method allows you to create the entire wig in one piece, with a single seam at the back that you can make with the crochet hook as you crochet the last row. And the best of all? It fits perfectly!

Bob Hair Crochet Wig Hat Pattern
This yarn bob hairstyle with bangs is worked sideways using the short-row method, turning at the end of every row.

What You’ll Need:
- Yarn: Worsted Weight (4) – more on the yarn below.
- 4.00 mm (G) crochet hook for adults/older teens or 3.75 mm (F) for children. See the size and gauge sections below for more details.
- Several stitch markers, scissors, and a tapestry needle.
Yarn Specifics and Recommendations:
I used multiple brands of 100% Acrylic yarn. You’ll need approximately 185 yards (170 m) for the large wig and 162 yards (148) for the smaller one. Here are some of my recommended acrylic yarns:

Abbreviations (US terms):
Asterisks indicate when certain instructions need to be repeated.

- flo: front loop only
- rem: remaining
- rep: repeat
- RS: right side
- sc: single crochet stitch
- sl st: slip stitch
- st(s): stitch(es)
- WS: wrong side
- Yo: yarn over
- [ ]: used for stitch count in a row
Project Size:
The finished bob crochet wig fits adults’ heads with a circumference of 22-23 inches (56-58.5 cm) when you use a 4.00 mm (G) crochet hook.
Sizing down the hook to 3.75 mm (F) will create a wig hat that fits children’s and teens’ heads with a circumference of 19-21 inches (51-55 cm). Please do not skip the gauge swatch to ensure the wig’s finished size is correct.
Stitch tension
For the smaller crochet wig, when made with a 3.75 mm (F) hook, you should have 18 sts x 23 rows = 4 inches (10 cm). As for the larger one, you should have 16 sts x 20 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) with a 4.00 mm (G) hook.
Gauge Swatch Pattern:
Use this pattern to crochet a gauge swatch before proceeding to the final project. Adjust the hook size as needed to meet the stitch tension informed above.
- Row 1: Ch 22, sl sl st in the back bump (aka third loop) of 2nd ch from hook and in the back bump of each ch across, ch 1, and turn. [21 sl sts]
- Row 2(RS): sc in blo across, ch 1, and turn.
- Row 3 (WS): sl st in each st across using both loops, ch 1, and turn.
- Row 4-25: rep rows 2 and 3.
Pattern notes:
- The model pictured is a life-size adult mannequin, with a head circumference of 23 inches (58.5 cm).
- This crochet wig pattern uses US crochet terms.
- Skill Level: Intermediate.
- This pattern uses single crochet and slip stitches in turning rows. We use the short-row method to shape the crown. If you know how to read patterns in US terms and interpret step-by-step visuals, you can work on this project.
- Turning chain “1” does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern, unless otherwise noted.

Rows 1 to 17
Row 1: Ch 48, then sl st in the back bump of 2nd ch from hook and in the back bump of each ch across, ch 1, and turn. [47 sl sts]
Row 2 (RS): sc in blo until two sts rem, ch 1, and turn.
Row 3 (WS): sl st in each st across using both loops, ch 1, and turn.
Row 4-17: rep rows 2 and 3 (seven more times), ch 1, and turn. You should have 31 sts in row 17.
Maggie’s Pro Tip: Use stitch markers throughout the pattern to keep track of row count. However, if you miss a count, remember that each ribbing (starting at the 2nd rib) in the pattern represents two rows. -
Rows 18 to 37
Row 18 (RS): sc in blo to last, do not turn, then *create the next sc: insert the hook through the turning ch flo of the previous row, yo, pull up a loop, insert the hook in the blo of the next sc st three rows below and pull up another loop (three loops on hook), complete the sc as usual. Then sc in blo of the next sc. Repeat from the asterisk until 1 sc st left. Sc in both loops of the last sc st. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 19 (WS): sl st in each st using both loops across, ch 1, and turn. [47 sl sts]
Row 20 (RS): sc in blo of next 31 sts, ch 1, and turn.
Row 21 (WS): sl st in each st across using both loops, ch 1, and turn.
Row 22 (RS): sc in blo to last, do not turn, then *create the next sc: insert the hook through the turning ch flo of the previous row, yo, pull up a loop, insert the hook in the blo of the next sc st three rows below and pull up another loop (three loops on hook), complete the sc as usual. Then sc in blo of the next sc. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 23 (WS): sl st in each st across using both loops, ch 1, and turn.
Row 24-37: Repeat rows 22 and 23. -
Rows 38 to 71 – Wig Bangs Section
Row 38 (RS): sc in blo until two sts rem, ch 1, and turn.
We are now repeating what we did in rows 2-3. However, we’ll do shorter rows to create the “bangs” portion of the wig.
Row 39 (WS): sl st in next 25 sts using both loops, ch 1, and turn.
Row 40 (RS): sc in blo until two sts rem, ch 1, and turn.
Row 41 (WS): sl st in each st across using both loops, ch 1, and turn.
Row 42-53: rep rows 40 and 41 (6 more times), ch 1, and turn. You should have 11 sts in row 53.
Row 54-55: Repeat rows 18 and 19.
Row 56 (RS): sc in blo of next 11 sts, ch 1, and turn.
Row 57 (WS): sl st in each st across using both loops, ch 1, and turn.
Row 58-71: Repeat rows 22 and 23. At the end of row 71 ch 21. -
Rows 72 to 109
Row 72 (RS): sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook and in the back bump of each of the next 19 chs, then continue to sc in blo and complete row 72 as done in row 22.
Row 73 (WS): sl st in each st across using both loops, ch 1, and turn.
Row 74-89: rep rows 2 and 3.
Row 90-91: rep rows 18 and 19.
Row 92-93: rep rows 20 and 21.
Row 94-109: rep rows 22 and 23. You should have 46 sc sts in row 108, ch 1, do not cut the yarn yet. Use the last sl st row to seam it to the first row with the crochet hook as you go. -
Crochet Wig’s Back Seam
. Release the loop from the hook at the end of row 108, then with the finished piece right-side out, align row 108 with the foundation/row 1.
. Insert the hook into the flo of the corresponding st on the opposite edge, then pull the loop through.
. Then, sl st along the edges, using only the front loops on both sides to seam them together. This should give you an invisible seam on the right side of the work. -
Finishing the wig hat
Thread a needle with a strand of yarn, fold it in half for strength, sew the top closed, then weave in all the loose ends. It’s normal for this wig hat to be a little pointy on top when finished; it will settle once on the head.
