These bags are perfect for adding a handmade touch to any occasion. Whether it’s for the holidays, Mother’s and Father’s Day, or a friend’s birthday, they are very versatile. By the way, I used the same stitch concept for the bag in this face scrubbie set and this soap pouches, with just a few tweaks and a sturdier bottom for the bag.
As for the optional poinsettia flowers, I love decorating my holiday crochet projects with them. Last year, I made wine cozies to give as gifts to a family member who hosted Christmas and to a friend, and the poinsettia was a huge hit.
Check out my wine cozy photo below, for which I’ve also created a pattern and made it available here on the blog (tap or click the image to view the pattern).

What You’ll Need:
- Worsted-Weight (4) yarn
- I used Mainstays Sparkle Acrylic Yarn for this crochet gift bag pattern, but Mary Maxim Starlette Sparkle or RHSS Metallic make great substitutes. We also need a tiny amount of yellow for the center of the flower.
- You’ll need approximately 61 yards (56 m) for the small bag, 104 yards (95 m) for the medium, and 142 yards (130 m) for the large one.
- 4.00mm/7 crochet hook
- 3.50mm/E hook for the poinsettia flower
- Scissors, tapestry needle, and stitch markers

Pattern Notes:
- This crochet gift bag pattern uses US Crochet Terms.
- Level of difficulty: Advanced beginner.
- These bags are crocheted bottom up using mesh stitches as the primary technique, which is a combination of single crochets and chains.
- To create a sturdy bottom, we use single crochet stitches in the first two rounds.
- I created three sizes of bags, each with the exact number of chains I used. However, you can customize it to any other size by starting your foundation with multiples of three chains.
- The numbers shown in brackets [ ] indicate the stitch and round count for the three different sizes: [S, M, L]. For example, [42, 60, 72], where 42 is for small, 60 is for medium, and 72 is for large.
