What You’ll Need:

  • Worsted weight (4) yarn. I used 100% acrylic yarn from my stash in black and orange. The amount of black yarn needed ranges from approximately 111 yards (102 m) to 400 yards (366 m), and the amount of orange yarn required varies from 9 yards (8 m) to 33 yards (30 m), depending on the size.
  • 4.00 mm (G) Tulip crochet hook
  • Scissors, stitch markers, and a tapestry needle

Hat Measurements:

This crochet witch hat pattern offers instructions for five sizes that will fit American Girl dolls, toddlers, children, teens, and Adults.

  • AG doll size: Fits 12.5” (32 cm) circumference heads.
  • Toddler size: Fits 18-19” (46-48 cm) circumference heads.
  • Child size: Fits 20-21” (51-53 cm) circumference heads.
  • Teen size: Fits 22” (56 cm) circumference heads.
  • Adult size: Fits 23” (58 cm) circumference heads.

Pattern notes:

  • This crochet witch hat pattern uses US Crochet Terms.
  • Level of difficulty: Advanced beginner.
  • This hat is crocheted from the top down to the brim using “yarn-under” single crochet stitches in continuous rounds.
  • To create the “yarn-under” single crochet stitch: insert the hook into the stitch, yarn under (the yarn goes under the hook instead of over, as in the usual way), pull up a loop, and complete the single crochet as usual.
  • Use stitch markers to assist you with round and stitch placement, moving them up as you go.
  • The numbers on the band and brim instructions of the pattern are provided in this Format and sequence of the instructions for the band and the brim: AG (Toddler, Child, Teen, Adult)—for example, Round 31 (45, 50, 54, 59), where 32 is for the AG doll, 45 is for toddler, 50 is for child, 54 is for teen, and 59 is for the adult size.

Stitch Tension:

Gauge is crucial for the proper fit of this crochet witch hat pattern. Start making the hat, and when you have the first 14 rounds, the cone should measure approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) in height and 4 ¼ inches (8 cm) measured across the bottom when squeezed.
