I made these tiny crochet hearts using leftover medium-weight yarn and a 3.5 mm/E hook. However, you can use any yarn weight. They take less than three yards to make and are the perfect project for yarn scraps.

If you’re looking for a last-minute crochet project to surprise someone with a sweet Valentine’s Day token, these tiny flat hearts are the perfect choice. I hope you enjoy making them.

The stitches in all the steps below are placed inside a magic circle. And before you start, if you prefer the abbreviated instructions, keep scrolling for the printable card.

Round #1: Smaller Heart

First, crochet three chains and one double crochet.

Creating a double crochet stitch (dc):

  • Yarn over and insert the hook in the stitch.
  • Yarn over again and pull up a loop (three loops on the hook).
  • (yarn over and pull through two) 2x to complete the stitch.

Next, crochet three treble stitches.

Creating a treble stitch (tr):

  • Yarn over 2x and insert the hook in the stitch.
  • Yarn over again and pull up a loop (four loops on the hook).
  • (yarn over and pull through two) 3x to complete the stitch.

Then, make four double crochet stitches and one chain for the pointy bottom of the heart. The first half of the heart is done. Do not cut the yarn yet. Continue inserting the stitches in the magic circle.

Now, make four double crochet stitches to start the second half of the heart.

Crochet three treble stitches and one double crochet, then chain 3.

Finish the simple crochet heart pattern with a slip stitch to join. Then, cut the yarn if you’re making a tiny, simple crochet heart. Pull the working yarn tail through the last loop, and carefully pull the magic circle tail to cinch it.

Thread the needle and weave in the loose ends on the back of the heart to hide them. Carefully trim the tails close to the work.

Round #2: Making the Heart Bigger

This step is optional, but you can add a second round of stitches to make the heart bigger.

  • Chain 3, then (single crochet, half double crochet) in the first double crochet stitch.
  • Two double crochet in each of the next three stitches.
  • Double crochet in each of the next four stitches.
  • (two double crochet, chain one, two double crochet) in the chain one space.
  • Double crochet in the next four stitches.
  • Two double crochet in each of the next three stitches.
  • (half double crochet, single crochet) in the last double crochet stitch.
  • To finish round #2, chain three and slip stitch in the initial top center of the heart. Follow the instructions in step 6 above to finish.
