How to Make a 3D Crochet Poinsettia Flower

Sharing is caring!

I love how a crochet poinsettia flower beautifully captures the spirit of “holiday handmade magic.” A few years ago, I started making these classic Christmas motifs to embellish my crochet gifts, and I adore how pretty and joyful they look.

If you look into a few of my previous designs, you’ll see what I mean. It first appeared as the star embellishment on my Crochet Wine Bottle Cozy. I gifted a few of these cozies to close family and friends last year, and I received many compliments on how beautiful they looked.

This crochet flower motif has quickly become one of my favorite crochet accents for the holiday season. It’s simple, versatile, and a lot of fun to create. You can make them in classic holiday colors, or, like I do, opt for unusual colors for a unique touch.

I later used it again on my Crochet Gift Bag Pattern and I intend to wrap my presents on these handmade bags this year. I love how festive they look!

Wondering about other ways to use them?

You can use them as embelishment motifs, like attaching them to hats, greeting card envelopes, or using them as gift toppers.

Ideas for decorations include stringing several together to create garlands, adding a string to create hanging ornaments, or incorporating them into your table decorations. Be sure to experiment with different yarn thickness and colors to create variations for your crochet poinsettia flower.

What You’ll Need:

  • Yarn – I used Mainstays Sparkle Acrylic Yarn, which is a medium weight (4) yarn and it’s the same yarn I used for my gifts bags linked above.
  • Crochet hook – I recommend for the top flower a hook at least two sizes smaller than what the yarn lable calls for and a larger hook for the flower that goes beneath.
  • Scissors, stitch marker and a yarn needle.

Crochet Poinsettia Flower Written Instructions

A crochet poinsettia flower with layered pink petals and a yellow center layered flat on a palm of a hand.

For this flower, I used two flowers to layer the final 3D one. However, you can make only one flower if you prefer it simple.

Total Time: 20 minutes

  1. Make the yellow circle

A hand holding a circle with crochet stitches in yellow yarn.

With yellow yarn, chain 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch) and 6 half double crochet in a magic circle, then slip stitch to join or use the invisible finish to create a perfect circle. Cut the yarn and fasten off.

  2. Start round 2

Crochet chains starting the first round of the base of the petals in pink yarn.

Switch to the main yarn color (the color you want the petals to be) and **chain 6. Then, slip stitch in the third loop of the second chain from the hook and in each third loop of the next 4 chs. To finish this petal base, slip stitch in the same base stitch as chain 6 (doesn’t count as a stitch), then slip stitch in the next st (doesn’t count as a stitch either)**.

Tip: The chains here should be loose rather than too tight to make the next step easier.

  3. Crochet another set of chains

Crochet chains starting the first round of the base of the petals in pink yarn.

Chain 6 again to create the base for the second crochet poinsettia flower’s petal.

  4. Finish round 2

Repeat the instructions between the double asterisks in step 2 to finish round 2, then slip stitch into the first chain to join.

  5. Crochet round 3

Completed base for the petals made of chains and slip stiches and finished first layer, in pink yarn.

    1. *Chain 2 to start, then double crochet in the same stitch as chain 2.
    2. Next, double crochet in each of the next two slip stitches and half double crochet in each of the next two slip stitches.
    3. (half double crochet, chain 3, pull up a loop in each of the back loops of the next 2 chains, then yarn over, pull through all loops on hook to create the point of the petal, and half double crochet) into the top turning chain.
    4. Half double crochet in each of the next two slip stitches. Then double crochet in each of the next three slip stitches, chain 2, and slip stitch in the same stitch as the last double crochet.
    5. Slip stitch in the half double crochet stitch two rounds below (in round 1), then slip stitch in the first chain in the next set of 6 sts.

Repeat from the asterisk 5 more times to complete each crochet poinsettia flower.

  6. Make the flower dimensional

With a larger hook, crochet a second identical flower and stitch it beneath the small one to create a 3D-looking crochet poinsettia flower. If you prefer the traditional poinsettia colors, crochet the small flower with red yarn and the larger with green.

Crochet Poinsettia Flower Pattern FAQ

What type of yarn is best for this poinsettia flower?

This pattern is ideal for worsted weight or DK yarn. Cotton yarn creates crisp petals, while acrylic or blended yarns offer a soft feel and shine. For a festive touch, try metallic or glitter-thread yarn!

How can I make the poinsettia bigger or smaller?

You can resize your poinsettia by changing the hook size and the yarn weight. Consider using fine yarns or thread with a smaller hook for a delicate mini version, ideal for ornaments or gift toppers.

What can I use these crochet poinsettias for?

The possibilities are endless! You can attach them to hats, scarves, and headbands, or use them to decorate your crochet gift bags and wine bottle cozies (like in my previous designs). It also makes lovely Christmas ornaments, garlands, or table centerpieces.

How long does it take to crochet a poinsettia flower?

Most crocheters can make these quick flowers in just under twenty minutes, which make them ideal for last-minute holiday decor or adding a handmade touch to gifts.
