When crocheted with the suggested yarn and hook size, Florence stands a charming 13 inches (33 cm) tall. Overall, this is a fun and easy Amigurumi crochet animal to work on. My pattern testers gave me 100% positive feedback, and they loved bringing Florence to life.
The pattern is detailed and unique. What sets Florence the Elephant apart from the crowd is her hands tucked in the pockets. Get the supplies ready, and I hope you love making Florence the Crochet Elephant!
Pattern Highlights
This Amigurumi elephant is crocheted in separate parts, with some hand sewing required. Start by making the head and ears, followed by the legs, torso, and arms.
I used medium-weight mercerized cotton yarn (4), which creates beautiful stitch definition, with a 2.75 mm (C) hook. However, any other yarn will work just fine.
The difficulty level is intermediate, and prior experience making Amigurumi is needed. But no worriesโI have added plenty of step-by-step photos to simplify it.

About the Yarn :
I used approximately 346 yards (317 m) of gray (silver) yarn and 128 yards (117 m) of pink yarn. The yarn was 24/7 100% mercerized cotton by Lion Brand.

This Amigurumi elephant is worked in continuous rounds of single crochet stitches. The stitches should be tight for better results.
The armpits and crotch may require some sewing to prevent holes from forming where the pieces are joined.
Stuff firmly as you go, but do not overstuff. Shape the elephant well by hand or with a stuffing tool.
A stitch marker is needed to mark each round’s first or last stitch, moving it up as you go.
If this Amigurumi elephant is for a young child, please avoid using small parts like safety eyes and buttons. These present choking hazards and should be left out.

Rnd34: (dec, sc in next 10 sts) 6x [66]
Step 1a: Inserting the safety eyes
Placement: Squeeze the trunk’s base to mark the center of the elephant’s face. Then, place the eyes between rounds 24 and 25, 22 stitches apart (11 stitches on each side of the nose). Before attaching the washers, squeeze the trunk’s base and check again to ensure correct placement. Continue making the Amigurumi elephant’s head.

Rnd38: (dec, sc in next 6 sts) 6x [42]
Rnd39: (dec, sc in next 5 sts) 6x [36]
FO. Cut the yarn.
Step 1b: Embroidering the eyelidsย
Embroider the eyelids on your crochet Amigurumi elephant before stuffing the head. Now is a good time for that.
Starting with the left eye, from the inside of the work, insert the yarn needle with a strand of yarn (about 40โ or 100 cm) on the left side of the eye and pull it out.
Next, draw it out at an angle in the upper right side of the eye and repeat four more times. Then FO and cut the yarn.
Repeat the previous steps with the other eye, starting on the right side of the right eye.
Step 1c: Creating the trunk
To attach the gray yarn, lay the head facing up, upside down. Attach the yarn to the first stitch of the trunk opening (on rnd 29) on the right side.
Rnd1-8: sc around [24]
Rnd9: (dec, sc in next 6 sts) 3x [21]
This is a good time to fill this Amigurumi elephant’s head and add fiber into the base of the trunk. Continue stuffing as you go.
Rnd10-16: sc around [21]
Rnd17: (dec, sc in next 5 sts) 3x [18]
Rnd18-24: sc around [18]
Rnd25: sc in flo around [18]
Rnd26: (dec in 1st st in blo on rnd 24, sc in next st in blo of rnd 24) 6x [12]
Rnd27: (dec) 6x [6]
FO. Cut the yarn. Weave in the end.
Step 1d: Creating the ears
This Amigurumi elephant has cute, floppy ears. Create two identical circles with the gray yarn.
Rnd1: sc 7 in a magic circle
Rnd2: (inc) 7x [14]
Rnd3: (inc, sc in next st) 7x [21]
Rnd4: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 7x [28]
Rnd5: (inc, sc in next 3 sts) 7x [35]
Rnd6: (inc, sc in next 4 sts) 7x [42]
Rnd7: (inc, sc in next 5 sts) 7x [49]
Rnd8: (inc, sc in next 6 sts) 7x [56]
Rnd9: (inc, sc in next 7 sts) 7x [63]
Rnd10: (inc, sc in next 8 sts) 7x [70]
Rnd11: (inc, sc in next 9 sts) 7x [77]
Rnd12: (inc, sc in next 10 sts) 7x [84]
Rnd13: (inc, sc in next 11 sts) 7x [91]
Rnd14: (inc, sc in next 12 sts) 7x [98]
Rnd15: (inc, sc in next 13 sts) 7x [105]
FO. Leave a long tail.
Step 1e: Attaching the ears
Fold both circles in half, with the wrong side out, and then squeeze the top together.
Pin them on to the sides of the head between rounds 14 and 17 and sew the first three stitches (both sides together) onto the head, slightly tilted towards the eyes.
Set aside the Amigurumi elephant’s head to be sewn onto the body later.
Tip: Cotton yarn makes this Amigurumi elephant’s ears sturdier and the stitch tension tighter. However, if they are too floppy and slanted, make two extra identical pieces and sew them together, wrong side with wrong side, for each ear.
Step 2: Creating the feet and legs
Start with the gray yarn, then switch to pink on rnd 17. Make two legs up to round 29.
Rnd1: sc 7 in a magic circle
Rnd2: (inc) 7x [14]
Rnd3: (inc, sc in next st) 7x [21]
Rnd4: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 7x [28]
Rnd5: (inc, sc in next 3 sts) 7x [35]
Rnd6: (inc, sc in next 4 sts) 7x [42]
Rnd7: (ps, do not ch, sc in next 2 sts) 4x, sc in next 30 sts [42]
Creating a sc ps (puff st): *yarn over, insert the hook in the next st, yarn over, and pull trough. Repeat from the * three more times (9 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through all loops to complete the ps (do not ch after).
Tip: You may need to poke the ps to the right side using your fingers since it tends to want to hide on the wrong side.
Rnd8: sc around [42]
Rnd9: (dec, sc in next 12 sts) 3 [39]
Rnd10: (dec, sc in next 11 sts) 3x [36]
Rnd11: (dec, sc in next 4 sts) 6x [30]
Rnd12: (dec, sc in next 3 sts) 6x [24]
Rnd13-16: sc around [24]
Cut the yarn. FO. Switch to the pink yarn, attaching the new yarn to the blo of the first st on rnd 16.
Rnd17: sl st in blo around [24].
Stuff the feet.
Rnd18: sc in blo around [24]
Rnd19: (inc, sc in next 3 sts) 6x [30]
Rnd20-21: sc around [30]
Rnd22: (inc, sc in next 4 sts) 6x [36]
Rnd23-29: sc around [36]
FO and cut the yarn (for leg #1 only).
Mark the first stitch of rnd 29 in leg #1 with a second stitch marker. This will help you remember where to join the legs in the following step of this Amigurumi elephant pattern.
Step 2a: Joining the legs
Make sure the toes are facing forward. Continue to rnd 30 from where you dropped the uncut yarn in leg #2.
Rnd30: sc in next 18 sts of leg #2, ch 3, go ahead and insert the hook into the 1st st of rnd 29 in leg #1, sc in that st and in next 35 sts, sc on top loop of each of the next 3 chs, sc in next 18 sts [75 sc, 3 chs]
Now that the Amigurumi elephant’s legs are attached to the crotch, you can remove the second stitch marker on the first leg. Next, continue crocheting around both legs in big rounds with the pink yarn to start the torso.
Step 3: Creating the Torso
Start the Amigurumi elephant’s torso with the pink yarn for the built-in overalls.
Rnd31: inc, sc in next 12 sts, inc, sc in next 4 sts, sc in next 3 ch, sc in next 5 sts, (inc, sc in next 12 sts) 4x [84]
Rnd32: inc, sc in next 14 sts, (inc, sc in next st) 6x, sc in next 16 sts, inc, sc in next 11 sts, (inc, sc in next st) 9x, sc in next 11 sts [101]
Rnd33: (inc) 2x, sc in next 48 sts, (inc) 2x, sc in next 49 sts [105]
Rnd34: (inc) 3x, sc in next 49 sts, (inc) 3x, sc in next 50 sts [111]
Rnd35: sc in next 74 sts, (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 9x, sc in next 10 sts [120]
Rnd36-37: sc around [120]
Youโll create two openings for the arms in the next two rounds.
Rnd38: sc in next 118 sts, sk the next 15 sts [118]
Rnd39: sc in next st, move st marker to that 1st st of rnd 39, sc in next 38 sts, sk the next 15 sts, sc in next 51 sts [90]
Rnd40-44: sc around [90]
Mark the blo of the first st on rnd 44 with a second stich marker. Youโll return to that st later to attach the gray yarn and continue crocheting this Amigurumi elephant’s torso after making the arms.
Rnd45: sc in flo around [90]
Rnd46: sc around [90]
FO. Cut the yarn.
Step 4: Crocheting the right arm
Switch to the gray yarn to create arms.
Rnd1: Lay the work flat with the toes facing up and attach the gray to the blo of the first st of the right arm hole, sl st in blo around. [15]
Rnd2: sc in blo around [15]
Rnd3-16: sc around [15]
FO. Cut the yarn.
Step 5: Crocheting the left arm

Rnd2: sc in blo around [15]
Rnd3-16: sc around [15]
FO. Cut the yarn.
Step 6: Back to crocheting the torso
Attach the grey yarn to crochet the torso.
Rnd1: Lay the work with toes facing up. Then, attach the yarn to blo of first st of rnd 44 (rnd 45 and 46 will be on the outside), sc around in blo. [90]
Rnd2-3: sc around [90]
Rnd4: sc in next 47 sts, (dec, sc in next 2 sts) 9x, sc in next 7 sts [81]
Rnd5-6: sc around [81]
Rnd7: sc in next 47 sts, (dec, sc in next st) 9x, sc in next 7 sts [72]
Rnd8-9: sc around [72]
Do not cut the yarn. Next, reattach the torso to the arms in the following round.
Rnd10: sc in next 2 sts, sc in 1st st and in next 14 sts of left arm, sc in next 38 sts of the torso, sc in 1st st and in next 14 sts of right arm, sc in next 32 sts [102]
Stuff the legs and arms, ensuring the ankles are well-shaped. Next, stuff the lower arms snugly but leave the upper parts relatively soft. Gradually add fiber to the torso. Ensure the Amigurumi elephant’s bottom is shaped firmly as well.
Rnd11: (dec, sc in next 15 sts) 6x [96]
Rnd12: (dec, sc in next 14 sts) 6x [90]
Rnd13: (dec, sc in next 13 sts) 6x [84]

Front and back panel
Step 9: Shoulder Straps
Ch 24, sl st into the top loop of 9th ch from the hook to form a loop, sl st into the top loop of the next 15 chs, dec in next 2 sc, sc in next 10 sc sts, dec. Ch 24 for the second strap, sl st into the lower loop of 9th ch from hook, sl st in in lower loop of next 15 chs.
Step 10: Sewing the head on
Position the head on top of the Amigurumi elephant’s body, ensuring itโs facing forward and centered. Sew both openings using the yarn needle and the remaining long strand. When you reach about two-thirds of the way through the sewing process, add more fiber to firm up the neck. Finish by weaving in the ends.
Step 11: Attaching the hair and finishing
Did you know? Baby elephant’s hair is called lanugo.
Make a fringe and attach it to the top of the Amigurumi elephant’s head:
Start by wrapping the yarn around three fingers about 15 times.
Release it, cut the ends, tie a tight double knot in the middle using a 15โ (38 cm) strand of yarn, and cut one of the loopโs ends.
Next, attach one end of the long strand to the top of the head, making a double knot to secure it well.
Then, wrap the two strands a few times in opposite directions around the base of the fringe to make the hair stand.
FO, weave in the ends inside of the head and trim.
Trim and weave in any left tails.
