It’s that wonderful time of year again to embrace the magic of crochet!

I had so much fun making this cute Amigurumi angel, and it was a great way to use up some of my leftover DK yarn.

I’m excited to display these lovely angels on my desk as Christmas decorations this year. They’d also make adorable ornaments or decorations for other occasions, such as Christenings, baptisms, weddings, and more! Happy crafting!

About the Pattern

These angels are crocheted from the top down using the Amigurumi technique. However, the wings are made separately, in one piece, and attached afterward.

The angels’ wings and robe edges are adorned with a round of surface slip stitches with golden yarn, adding unique details.

Chains and slip stitches create the arms, which become a simple cord. Using a tapestry needle, insert the cord into the shoulders and tie a knot with the yarn ends in the front to mimic the hands. It’s as simple as that!

You’ll Love These Crochet Angels

  • They make cute small gifts. I love creating crochet gifts—they’re such a charming way to show you care! Imagine adding a cute hanging loop to transform one into an adorable ornament, keychain, or a lovely gift topper.
  • These little Angels are perfect stash busters. I used only approximately 50 yards of yarn to make an angel. If you have yarn leftovers, use them to make these crochet Angels.
  • Crocheting them is super fun and quick. Projects like this one not only invite mindfulness but also use simple Amigurumi stitches that make it easy to bring your very own crochet angel to life. You can create one in just about an hour.

Crochet Angel Pattern

This pattern uses standard US Crochet Terminology.

Level of difficulty: Intermediate.

Materials

  • Lightweight (#3) yarn, approximately 50 yards (46 m). I used 24/7 DK, Truboo, and Coboo by Lion Brand
  • A small amount of golden or yellow lightweight yarn or thread
  • 2.75 mm (US C) Clover Amour crochet hook
  • Stitch Markers
  • A small amount of stuffing fiber (for the head only)
  • Jute cord for the hanging loop (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

  • This crochet angel pattern is created in continuous rounds of single crochet stitches.
  • The only part of this pattern that requires stuffing is the head.
  • Stitch tension must be tight to make the angel sturdy enough to stand.
  • The recommended hook size in this pattern should be small enough to keep your tension tight, but you can change it if needed.
  • Gauge is not crucial for this project. However, using a different yarn weight and hook may change the final size of the angel.
  • Use stitch markers to help you keep track of stitch and row count, moving them up as you go.

Crochet Angel Pattern

Here are the instructions for this cute crochet angel pattern. Please refer to the pattern notes and materials list to ensure you know what to expect about the pattern.

Total Time: 1 hour

  1. Wings (made in one piece)

    blue yarn and hook

Ch 6 to start. You are going to crochet an oval.
Round 1: inc in 2nd ch from the hook, sc 3, inc in last ch, sc 3 in opposite loops of chs. [10]
    Round 2: (inc x 2, sc 3) x 2. [14]
    Round 3: (inc x 4, sc 3) x 2. [22]
    Round 4: *(inc, sc) x 4, sc 3, rep from * once more. [30]
    Round 5: *(inc, sc 2) x 4, sc 3, rep from * once more. [38]
    Round 6: *(inc, sc 3) x 4, sc 3, rep from * once more. [46]
    Round 7: *(inc) x 20, sc 3, rep from * once more. [86]

We are intentionally adding extra stitches to the upcoming rounds to shape the wings when we fold the oval in half lengthwise.

    Round 8: sc across. [86]
    Round 9: (ch 1, sc) across. [86 sc, 86 ch 1 sps]
Cut the yarn and fasten off. Switch to the golden yarn.
Golden stripe: surface sl st in round 8 across. See the instructions below. [86]
Cut the yarn. FO. Set aside.

Tip: the golden stripes are an optional step in this crochet angel pattern, but it’s a cute way to adorn your work and make it unique.

  2. Make the surface slip stitch

    blue yarn and crochet hook

    1. Create a slip knot with the new yarn and place it under the work. The working yarn will stay under the work the entire time.
    2. Insert the hook into the first stitch, front to back, grab the slip knot loop behind the work, and pull through your work to the right side.
    3. From here, you’ll work one surface slip stitch in each stitch around.
    4. Cut the yarn and pull the end through your work to the right side. Thread a needle and finish the last stitch with the needle.

  3. Head

    hand holding blue yarn

Round 1: sc 6 in a magic circle
    Round 2: (inc) x 6. [12]
    Round 3: (inc, sc) x 6. [18]
    Round 4: (inc, sc 2) x 6. [24]
    Round 5-9: sc across. [24]
    Round 10: (dec, sc 2) x 6. [18]
    Add the stuffing fiber.
    Round 11: (dec, sc) x 6. [12]
    Round 12: dec x 6. [6]
Do not cut the yarn. Go to the following step to make the robe.

  4. Robe

    hand holding blue yarn

    Round 13: (inc) x 6. [12]
    Round 14: (inc) x 12. [24]
    Round 15-17: sc across. [24]
    Round 18: (inc, sc 3) x 6. [30]
    Round 19-21: sc across. [30]
    Round 22: (inc, sc 4) x 6. [36]
    Round 23-25: sc across. [36]
    Round 26: (inc, sc 5) x 6. [42]
    Round 27-29: sc across. [42]
Round 30: (ch 1, sc) across, sl st in the last sc st.
Cut the yarn and fasten off. Switch to the golden yarn.
Golden stripe: surface sl st in round 30 across. Cut the yarn. FO. [42]

  5. Arms

    hand holding blue yarn

The arms are created with one single cord. Before you finish the arms placement, ensure the “hands” reach six rounds above the robe’s hem.

    1. Chain 27 (or less if your chains are loose), leaving a 5” (13 cm) long tail.
    2. Slip stitch in the back bump of each chain across to create a cord.
    3. Cut the yarn and leave another long tail.
    4. Thread a tapestry needle with the long tails and insert the cord into the shoulders, three rounds below the neck from one side to the other.
    5. Align both ends in the front and use the tails to tie and stitch them to the front of the angel, six rounds above the hem.
    6. Bring the ends to the inside and fasten off.

  6. Halo (Tiara)

hand holding blue and golden yarn

    1. Double the strand of the lightweight golden yarn and chain 18, or as many chains as needed to fit the head’s size (about two stitches shorter).
    2. Cut the yarn and wrap the cord around the angel’s head.
    3. Tie a knot at the back, tightening it to hold it in place.
    4. Thread a needle with the yarn tails and secure it with a stitch in the front and one in the back.
    5. Hide the tails inside the head.

  7. Attach the wings

hand holding blue and gold yarn

Thread the needle with a strand of matching yarn. Attach the top of the wing piece centered two rounds below the shoulders. Then, attach the bottom of the wing, sewing both layers along with the angel’s back. Fasten off and weave in all the leftover ends.

Tip: There are no right or wrong ways to attach the wing piece to this crochet angel pattern. A few stitches at the top and a few at the bottom will secure it.

  8. Hanging loop

    pink yarn

If you make an ornament with this crochet angel pattern, use craft string, such as jute rope, to create a hanging loop. Thread a tapestry needle with the string, draw it out from the inside of the angel to the top of the head, and make a loop to hang.

Frequently Asked Questions about Crochet Angels

How to stiffen a crochet angel?

You can stiffen this crochet angel pattern by tightening your tension while working your single crochet stitches. For an even stiffer finish, consider using a fabric stiffener, which can be found at any craft store.

Can I use thick yarns for this crochet angel pattern?

I recommend using light-worsted weight (DK) yarns or thinner for small angels. However, since this is a tiny crochet project, you can try medium-weight yarns and see if you like them.

Can a beginner crochet this angel?

This crochet angel pattern is designed with intermediate crocheters in mind! But if you’re comfortable with reading US crochet terms and have a grasp on the basic stitches for Amigurumi, you might find it doable.
