This basket is perfect for anyone seeking a quick project for an Easter egg hunt, preparing for Halloween trick-or-treating, or searching for a small gift in spring. It takes less than ten minutes to whip up one (it’s that quick!).

They are also ideal for personalizing with various colors of leftover yarn for any occasion. As you can see in my photos, I love earth tones; they align with my neutral color preferences. However, they will look lovely with bright spring colors as well.

While youโ€™re here, you might also want to check out my other Spring crochet ideas. There’s a larger crochet basket that can hold many Easter eggs. My pattern for Easter eggs includes instructions for two sizes; the small ones will be perfect for fitting into this small crochet basket youโ€™re about to create.

How to Crochet a Mini Basket

This mini basket is crocheted from the bottom up and can be completed in under 10 minutes. First, we crochet the bottom using increases of single crochet stitches to ensure it is flat. Next, we crochet the sides in plain rows of stitches and add the handle.

We only need a handful of supplies and tools. The yarn can be any bulky (5) or medium weight (4) with two strands held together. However, any lighter yarns will also work for an even tinier basket.

Materials:

  • Bulky (5) yarn โ€“ I used approximately 0.95 oz (27 g) or 30 yards (28 m) of Hue + Me by Lion Brand for one basket.
  • 5 mm(H) hook โ€“ I used a Tulip hook.
  • Stitch marker โ€“ mark the first or last stitch, moving it up as you go.
  • Tapestry needle โ€“ a big-eyed needle works best with thick yarns.
  • Embellishing materials โ€“ beads, buttons, or ribbons (optional).

Pattern Notes:

This mini crochet basket pattern uses US crochet terminology.

Skill Level: Easy.

Stitch tension: the diameter of the first four rounds of the basket, which is the bottom, measures approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm).

Finished project size: a mini crochet basket size is approximately 3″ (7.5 cm) in diameter and 3″ (7.5 cm) in height, not including the handle.

Abbreviations (US terms):

  • ch(s): chain(s)
  • inc: increase or two single crochet stitches into the next stitch.
  • FO: Fasten Off or Finish Off
  • mc: magic circle
  • sc: yarn under single crochet
  • sk: skip
  • sp: space
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • ( ): repeat the instructions in parenthesis as many times as directed
  • [ ]: stitch count in a round

Special Stitch Explanation:

Weโ€™re crocheting this mini basket with the โ€œyarn underโ€ single crochet stitch in continuous rounds. In other words, we are placing the yarn under the hook instead of over the hook when creating the stitch.

For continuous rounds, we do not join them with a slip stitch. Instead, continue working in a spiral. This technique is commonly used in Amigurumi and helps create seamless projects.

Creating a โ€œyarn underโ€ single crochet stitch:

Start the stitch by inserting the hook into the next stitch. Then, yarn under, pull up a loop, and yarn over. Pull up a loop and complete the stitch as usual.

Instructions

Start your mini crochet basket here.

Bottom of the basket

Weโ€™re creating a flat circle with 4 rounds of sc sts for the bottom. Crochet continuous rounds, do not join.

Rnd1: 7 sc in a mc

Rnd2: inc 7x [14]

Rnd3: (inc, sc) 7x [21]

Rnd4: (inc, 2 sc) 7x [28]

Cut the yarn. FO.

Note: You can continue without cutting the yarn. However, a bump will be created in the bottom edge when transitioning to the back post stitches in the next step.

Siding

Attach the yarn to the back post of any stitch in round 4. We are doing continuous rounds of plain single crochet stitches.

Rnd5: bpsc around. [28]

Keep going in continuous rounds without joining with a slip stitch.

Rnd6-11: sc around. [28]

Rnd12: sl st around. [28]

Rnd13: (sl st, ch1) around on top of the sl sts in round 12 (this technique creates a thick edge). Do not cut the yarn yet.

Handle

Release the last yarn loop from the hook. Then, insert the hook into the next st from the inside. Then, pull the loop to the inside of the basket.

Next, ch 18. Slip st in the st across the edge (make sure itโ€™s centered), and do another slip st in the nearest st to secure it well (ensure the chs are not twisted).

Lastly, go back and slip st in each ch across the handle. Anchor the last slip st in another st on the edge of the basket to secure it well.

And just like that, we have finished the mini crochet basket. I chose to leave mine plain, but you can embellish it with buttons, ribbons, or beads (your choice). It’s simple and quick.
