Crochet Stitches for Blankets – 20+ FREE tutorials

Sharing is caring!

The most important decision when you want to crochet a baby blanket is possibly the kind of stitch you will use. So, the question I recommend you ask yourself when looking for the perfect crochet stitches for blankets is what kind of blanket or afghan you are making.

I would choose a solid stitch if I was making a super warm blanket. Or I would go with a lacier stitch for an heirloom baby afghan, for example.

What are the best crochet stitches for blankets?

  • Choose a blanket with an easy stitch and small enough that you can finish quickly. Most stitches are a combination of the basic stitches you first learn.
  • The crochet moss stitch, for example, is a combination of single crochet and chains ). There are multiple possibilities with the moss stitch. You can crochet it in rounds, in rows and even corner to corner.
  • Another great stitch the alpine stitch. It consists of single crochet and double crochet only and it’s so easy to crochet. Not to mention, it’s beautiful. It can also be crocheted in rounds and rows.

What yarn is the best for blankets?

The best yarns for blankets are acrylic and cotton because they are durable. Of course, it depends on the purpose of the blanket you are making as well. If you are making baby blankets, for example, the best yarns are the cotton, bamboo and/or acrylic blends.

Those types of fiber are usually the most gentle ones on a little human’s skin. Obviously, something else to consider when choosing your yarn is the kind of stitch.

My advice is that you plan the stitch and project before you buy the yarn. Make swatches with scrap yarn from your stash, if that’s an option.

If you live in the US, like I do, you have a big selection of beautiful yarn to choose from. In fact, it truly depends on the kind of blanket you are making, like I mentioned earlier in this article.

Baby blankets are very popular projects, so it’s easy to find yarn for them. Yarnspirations, for example, has a whole line of yarn for baby blankets. LionBrand is another big brand that has a nice selection of baby yarn as well.
