For the pictured tops, I picked out two color palettes: one that’s super vibrant and captures all the summer feels, and another with more muted tones for a chill look. They’re perfect for using up leftover yarn, too!

Make sure to go for natural fibers such as bamboo, cotton, or a cotton blend. They’re comfy, breathable, and have just the right structure to keep their shape without feeling too stiff.

I had so much fun designing this bikini top. I went for a modest piece, large enough to wear either at the beach or as a halter top or a gorgeous bralette layered with a shirt. By the way, before jumping into the instructions, I wanted to mention I have other clothing patterns here on the blog you may like to look at.

Summer Bikini Top Pattern Overview

This crochet bikini top pattern was created using two beautifully crafted triangle cups, each made with our beloved granny stitch. This technique forms a textured pattern of double crochet clusters that naturally create small, lacy holes.

First, we work the triangles from the center outwards, expanding with each round to create a cup shape. This technique is ideal for bras, bralettes, and bikini tops. Each triangle starts with a magic ring, from which you’ll build outward in rounds of three double-crochet clusters, achieving that classic granny look.

Once the triangles are complete, we can create lining pieces as an alternative for improved coverage. Next, we will attach the outer triangles with the lining pieces and finish them with a scalloped border for a flirty, feminine touch.

Finally, we will crochet sturdy ties at the top and bottom of the cups, ensuring that the top ties are long enough to create an adjustable halter necktie. The ties can be in a coordinating color, and we can add beads for a boho-inspired finish.

Materials

  • Light Worsted/DK (3) or Fine (2) weight yarn – cotton or cotton blend yarn – solids or multi-colored are perfect for this crochet bikini top pattern, you decide (more about the yarn below).
  • 2.25 mm/B crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Embelishing Beads (optional)
  • 1 pair of removable bra inserts in the desired size – must be at least ½ to 1 inch smaller than the bikini top cups (optional)

Yarn Specifics

The tops in the picture for this crochet bikini top pattern were crocheted using fine (2) and light worsted (3) from my stash. I used cotton or cotton blend – I like cotton because it’s light and cool for the warm seasons.

The amount will vary according to size, brand, and stitch tension, but it takes only a small amount, about 200 to 300 yards dependig on size.

Here are some good yarn options:

Stitch Tension

Gauge is not crucial for this crochet bikini top pattern. Size can be adjusted by adding or subtracting rounds for the cups. For reference, the cup triangle with five rounds will measure approximately 3.5” x 3.5” x 3.5” (9 x 9 x 9 cm) when using fine (2) or Light Worsted (3) yarns and a 2.25 mm/B crochet hook.

Sizing tip #1: When using the listed yarn weight and hook size for this crochet bikini top pattern, repeat round 3# through 7 for A/B cups, through 11 for C/D cups, and 14 for D/E cups. If using a different yarn weight, repeat round 3 to the desired cup size. Then, cut the yarn, FO, and weave in the ends.

Sizing tip #2: The size recommendation above offers full cup coverage. To achieve a smaller cup, decrease the number of rows as needed.

Step 2: Adding the Pads

Using foam pads for this crochet bikini top pattern is optional. However, if the pads are left out, crocheting and attaching the lining piece in the next step is recommended.

Method #1: Sewing the pads

Begin by aligning the bra pad with the crochet cup and securing it with sewing pins. Next, use a sewing needle and thread to sew along at least one round below the crochet cup edges. Repeat this step for the second cup and set them aside.

Method #2: Removable pads

Create a pocket on the far side of each cup to make the pads removable when attaching the lining (refer to the next step of this crochet bikini top pattern for the instructions).

Step 3: Creating the Lining

Use the pattern for the outer cups above to create two lining cups the same size as the outside cups. I used the yarn color from the last round on the cup pattern. Follow these instructions to attach the lining to the outside cups.

  • Pair both triangles together, wrong side with wrong side.
  • Then, using the edge stitches from both layers (outside cup and lining piece), attach the yarn to one of the corners with the outside cup on top.
  • When creating a pocket for the removable pad, skip several sts on the far sides to form the pocket (large enough to fit the pads). Then, sc only on the outside cup edging for that number of sts (PHOTO #1 below). For my cup size (C/D), I used 11 sts for the pocket opening.
  • Next, crochet one sc st for each stitch on both cups along two sides of the triangle only. We are leaving the bottom of the cups open and will close them in the next step (PHOTO #2 below).
  • Repeat the above steps with the second cup. Cut the yarn and fasten off.

Step 4: Joining the Cups and Creating the Band

Attach the yarn to the last stitch from the previous step of this crochet bikini top pattern, then sc on the right side (of the outside cup) as well as the lining cup to connect both layers of sts along the bottom.

Tip: Stitch count is not crucial at this stage fo the crochet bikini top pattern, but we should have an odd number of sts on row #1 by following the instructions below.

Row 1: sc into each st across the first cup (1 sc for each sc and 1 sc for each corner), ch 3 (or any other odd number of chs), skip to the second cup, and sc along its bottom edge (1 sc for each sc and 1 sc for each corner), without cutting the yarn. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2-3: sc to the next corner, sc in each of the 3 chs in the center, sc to the last corner of the next triangle, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: 3 more chs (4 total), sk the first st, dc, (sk 1 st, ch 1, dc) across.

Row 5: (Ch 3, hdc 2 in the 3rd ch from the hook, sk the next ch 1 sp, sc in the next dc st) across.

Step 5: Scalloped Edging for the Cups

This is step is not a requirement for this crochet bikini top pattern. However, it’s a way to embelish the top and give it some boho vibes.

Attach the yarn to one of the far corners of the bikini top, on the right side, then:

*(Ch 4, dc 2 in the 4th ch from the hook, sk 2 sts, sc in next st) to the next corner, sc 2 (this will be the base for the halter string.

Repeat the scallop sts down to the next cup corner*, sc in each of the three middle chs. Repeat the instructions between the asterisks with the other cup.

Step 6: Creating the Strings

Band Drawstring:

  • Create a chain string as long as needed for your bra band size, long enough for the back tie.
  • Then sl st in the back bump of each ch across to create a shoelace-style string.
  • For a 45” (114 cm) string, I chained 270 with Light Worsted (3) yarn and a 2.25 mm (B) hook.
  • Insert the drawstring into the open stitches on the bra band.
  • Weave it in and out in every open stitch.

Shoulder String Ties:

Attach the yarn to the top of the cup and chain 140 to create the string ties, one at a time, using the same method described above. Use at least four stitches at the base of the string to anchor it securely.

Tip: Enhance the appeal and make your bikini top unique by embellishing the shoulder ties with beads.
