For the pictured tops, I picked out two color palettes: one that’s super vibrant and captures all the summer feels, and another with more muted tones for a chill look. They’re perfect for using up leftover yarn, too!
Make sure to go for natural fibers such as bamboo, cotton, or a cotton blend. They’re comfy, breathable, and have just the right structure to keep their shape without feeling too stiff.
I had so much fun designing this bikini top. I went for a modest piece, large enough to wear either at the beach or as a halter top or a gorgeous bralette layered with a shirt. By the way, before jumping into the instructions, I wanted to mention I have other clothing patterns here on the blog you may like to look at.

Summer Bikini Top Pattern Overview
This crochet bikini top pattern was created using two beautifully crafted triangle cups, each made with our beloved granny stitch. This technique forms a textured pattern of double crochet clusters that naturally create small, lacy holes.
First, we work the triangles from the center outwards, expanding with each round to create a cup shape. This technique is ideal for bras, bralettes, and bikini tops. Each triangle starts with a magic ring, from which you’ll build outward in rounds of three double-crochet clusters, achieving that classic granny look.
Once the triangles are complete, we can create lining pieces as an alternative for improved coverage. Next, we will attach the outer triangles with the lining pieces and finish them with a scalloped border for a flirty, feminine touch.
Finally, we will crochet sturdy ties at the top and bottom of the cups, ensuring that the top ties are long enough to create an adjustable halter necktie. The ties can be in a coordinating color, and we can add beads for a boho-inspired finish.
Materials
- Light Worsted/DK (3) or Fine (2) weight yarn – cotton or cotton blend yarn – solids or multi-colored are perfect for this crochet bikini top pattern, you decide (more about the yarn below).
- 2.25 mm/B crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
- Embelishing Beads (optional)
- 1 pair of removable bra inserts in the desired size – must be at least ½ to 1 inch smaller than the bikini top cups (optional)
- Sewing pins, sewing thread and needle to sew the pads on (there are instructions for creating a pocket for the pads as well, instead of sewing)
Yarn Specifics
The tops in the picture for this crochet bikini top pattern were crocheted using fine (2) and light worsted (3) from my stash. I used cotton or cotton blend – I like cotton because it’s light and cool for the warm seasons.
The amount will vary according to size, brand, and stitch tension, but it takes only a small amount, about 200 to 300 yards dependig on size.
Here are some good yarn options:
- Premier Cotton Fair – My favorite Fine (2) cotton and acrylic blend (so soft!).
- Lion Brand 24/7 – My favorite DK/Light Worsted 100% Cotton
- Lion Brand Coboo Cotton Bamboo – a super soft DK/Light Worsted that’s perfect for summer clothing.
- Patons Grace Mercerized Cotton (3)/DK is very similar to 24/7 DK.
Stitch Tension
Gauge is not crucial for this crochet bikini top pattern. Size can be adjusted by adding or subtracting rounds for the cups. For reference, the cup triangle with five rounds will measure approximately 3.5” x 3.5” x 3.5” (9 x 9 x 9 cm) when using fine (2) or Light Worsted (3) yarns and a 2.25 mm/B crochet hook.
