- The pattern was written as follows: XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL). For example, “Crochet to row 16 (19, 22, 22, 25, 25, 28, 31, 34),” whereas 16 is for size XS, 19 for size S, 22 for size M and L, 25 for size XL and 2XL, 28 for size 3XL, 31 for size 4XL, and 34 for size 5XL. Pattern Instructions
Step 1: Crocheting the rectangles (x2)
Color change tip: I changed yarn colors every two rounds, alternating between white, red, and blue. However, there is no right or wrong way to do this. The colors can be coordinated as desired.
Foundation: Ch 143 (146, 146, 149, 149,152, 152, 155, 155), or any other multiples of 3 plus 2 (loose chains).
Size Tip: This is where we can adjust the length of the patriotic crochet top pattern. Add more chains to transform it into a 4th of July beach dress or subtract chains to create a crop top. Every multiple of three chains will add about one inch to the length when the stitch tension matches.
Row 1: dc cluster in the 5th ch from the hook, (sk 2 chs, dc cluster in the next ch) until 3 chs remain, sk two chs, dc in the last ch, ch 4, turn.
Row 2: dc cluster in the first sp between the last dc and dc cluster in the previous row, (dc cluster in each sp between the dc clusters in the previous row) across, ch 3, turn.
Row 3: (dc cluster in each sp between the dc clusters in the previous row) until one cluster remains, dc between the last dc cluster and the ch 3 sp, ch 4, turn.
Repeat rows #2 and #3 to row 16 (19, 22, 22, 25, 25, 28, 31, 34)
Step 2: Seaming the rectangles
Note: Refer to the size chart above for the armhole size when stitching the sides.
Begin by folding the rectangles in half, then align the edges of the last row against each other. We will create four seams (one at a time): one for the front, one for the back, and one for each side of the top. The side where the seams are made will be the right side of the top.
The front and back seams in this patriotic crochet top pattern will create a V-neckline. It can be sewn to the desired neckline depth, approximately two-thirds of the height. As for the sewing method, I used the slip stitch method with a crochet hook and a matching yarn color for the sides and the front/back seams. Here is how we do it:
- First, we insert the hook into the back loop (from front to back) of the first stitch in one panel.
- Then, we insert the hook into the back loop of the corresponding stitch on the other panel.
- Next, yarn over and pull through to complete the slip stitch.
- We then repeat the process, creating slip stitches until we complete the seaming, keeping the yarn at the back of the work. Then, cut the yarn and fasten off.
Sewing Tip: The seams can also be hand-sewn if preferred.
Step 3: Armhole and Neckline Edges
I used a row of a scallop stitch for all edges on this patriotic crochet top pattern. However, this can also be achieved with any other stitch that is suitable for edges. Here is how we do the scallop stitch:
- Attach the yarn to any spot of the armhole edges or the neckline.
- Chain 4, dc 3 into the fourth chain from the hook, sc into the sp between the next two granny clusters.
- Repeat step #2, then sl st to join. Then, cut the yarn, fasten off, and repeat this process for all edges.
Step 4: Hem
The hem is a simple single crochet row followed by a slip stitch row.
Row 1: Attach the yarn and sc 3 for each stitch post around the hem.
Row 2: sl st around. This will create support and take out some of the stretch from the bottom of the top.
And just like that, with only four steps, we’ve completed the patriotic crochet top pattern. I hope you enjoy celebrating the 4th of July with your new, handmade top.
FAQ
What type of yarn should I use for this top?
July is a hot summer month in the U.S. For that reason, I recommend using high-quality cotton or cotton-blend yarn for this patriotic crochet top pattern. Cotton is breathable, lightweight, and perfect for summer wear, helping keep you cool while maintaining the structure and vibrant colors of the U.S. flag design.
How is the top constructed?
The top consists of two identical granny stitch panels positioned side by side. These panels are crocheted separately, then folded in half and seamed together vertically at the sides, front, and back. The simplicity of the granny stitch makes it beginner-friendly, giving the top a classic, vintage-inspired look.
Can I customize the size of the top?
Yes! This patriotic crochet top pattern includes guidelines for adjusting the panel width and length to create your desired fit. Simply add or subtract rows and stitch multiples to tailor the top to your preference. A sizing chart is included to help with measurements.
Can I use yarn colors that fit other occasions?
Absolutely! I’m calling it a patriotic crochet top pattern, but you can use it for any occasion. Choose your favorite colors or keep it simple with a single color. Self-striping yarn will also work beautifully with this pattern.
