Ways to Join Sunflower Granny Squares
The single crochet stitch join is best if you want a bulkier seam. However, if you want an invisible seam, you can easily hand-sew the squares with a tapestry needle using the Mattress (or Ladder) stitch.
The Single Crochet Join Method
- Pair the first two squares facing each other, wrong wide with wrong side.
- With the crochet hook, attach the yarn to chain-2 space on both squares and slip stitch to join both corners, right to left.
- Work single crochet stitches into both squares to the next corner.
- Keep working with single crochet stitches to join as many squares as needed for the desired project size. You are doing it in both horizontal and vertical directions.
Mattress (or Ladder) Stitch Join Method
- Thread a tapestry needle with a strand of the yarn to join the squares and sew the first two squares from right to left.
- Work the mattress stitch into the back loops only of the stitches in both squares across.
- Repeat the ladder movement back and forth to the next corner.
- Grab the next two squares and do the same until you have attached enough squares to the desired project size. You are doing it in both horizontal and vertical directions.
Sunflower Granny Square FAQโs
How Many Rows Should Sunflower Granny Squares Have?
Typically, a classic square has four rounds. However, you can add more granny stitch rounds like what you did in round# 4. It all depends on what youโre making, your yarn, and how large you want the squares to be.
How Many Sunflower Granny Squares for a Blanket?
It depends on the size of the blanket you want to make. Since each square measures approximately 5 inches (13 cm), you will need 36 squares for a 30โ x 30โ (76 x 76 cm) baby blanket. And for a larger blanket, like a throw, youโll need 80 squares for a 50โ x 40โ (127 x 102 cm) blanket.
How Many Colors of Yarn Should I Use on a Square?
A sunflower granny square really pops when you use four yarn colors, one for each round. You can go with classic sunflower shades or pick whatever colors you like. It all comes down to what fits your project and what youโre into.
