If you have been following me on Instagram for a while you have probably noticed that Amigurumi is one of my favorite crochet projects to make. It fulfills my creative mind when I am able to design these little 3D pieces of crochet work.

Also, I would like to mention that I have exclusive premium Amigurumi patterns that you can find on my Etsy shop. But I thought it was time to create a crochet doll free pattern to share with my followers.

So, I designed Yara. Thankfully, she came up as a cute and sassy little doll and I hope you will love making her as much as I did.

Best yarn for a crochet Amigurumi doll

Worsted weight (4) 100% Acrylic yarn is the ideal yarn to make an Amigurumi doll. However, you can use any kind of yarn of your preference. As for the hair, I used a bulky (5) yarn that was suitable for this crochet doll free pattern.

But it is important to mention that not all bulky yarn may be suitable for the hair.

The Yarn I Used

For the doll, I used Worsted weight (4) 100% Acrylic yarn.

  • Color 1 (C1): Black, for the legs. Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek by Hobby Lobby. You will need approx. 0.63 oz (18 g) | 33 yds (30 m).
  • Color 2 (C2): Red, for the dress. Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek by Hobby Lobby. You will need approx. 1.2 oz (34 g) | 62 yds (57 m).
  • Color 3 (C3): Light peach, for the skin. I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby. You will need approx. 0.87 oz (25 g) | 44 yds (40 m)

For the Hair, I used Homespun by Lion Brand bulky (5) worked fine, I was able to crochet the wig cap with the same hook size I used for this crochet doll free pattern.

  • Color 4 (C4): Wild fire, for the hair. You will need approx. 1.85 oz (53 g) | 57 yds (52 m).

Tips and tricks to crochet an Amigurumi doll

  • Crochet Amigurumi is crocheted in a continuous spiral with Single Crochet stitches (sc). Meaning you won’t join the end of each round with a slip stitch. Unless if/where otherwise instructed.
  • Amigurumi needs to be crocheted with tight stitches so the fiber won’t show through holes after stuffing. For that, the hook size recommended in this pattern will help you out with keeping the tension tight without much effort.
  • But if you have a loose tension you may need to use a smaller hook.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round as you go.
  • If the doll is being made for a child, please refrain from using small parts, like safety eyes and buttons.

Patterns Notes

  • The instructions in this pattern is to crochet a doll from bottom up. First, you will make both arms and then you will crochet the legs, the torso and the head, all in one piece. Then, you will attach the limbs with the crochet hook as you go.
  • Stuff firmly as you go, but do not overstuff.
  • The crotch may need some sewing to avoid holes from joining the pieces.
  • When fastening off and cutting the yarn, there is no need to leave a long tail, unless otherwise instructed.
  • I do not recommend Homespun yarn by Lion Brand for the hair if you are making this doll for a young child because it can break apart easily.

    Crochet Amigurumi Doll

Start with the hand with C3
    Rnd15 sc in a mr
    Rnd2: (inc) 5 times [10]
Rnd3 (inc, sc in next st) 5 times [15]
    Rnd4-7: sc around [15]
FO. Cut the yarn. Attach C2 and continue to the arm.
    Rnd8: sl st around [15]
Rnd9: sc in blo around [15]
    Rnd10-21: sc around [15]
Stuff the hands firmly and add only a tiny bit of stuffing in the arms.
Rnd22: (dec, sc in next st) 5 times [10]
FO. Cut the yarn. Set the arms aside.

  2. Crochet the legs (make 2)

    Crochet Amigurumi Doll

    Rnd1: 6 sc in a mr
    Rnd2: (inc) 6 times [12]
Rnd3: (inc, sc in next st) [18]
    Rnd4-16: sc around [18]
FO. Cut the yarn for first leg only.

When you finish round 16 in the second leg, do not cut the yarn. Next, remove the stitch marker and attach the legs together in the next round.

For that, keep the hook inserted in the last stitch of the second leg, then insert the hook in any stitch of round 16 in the first leg and complete a single crochet as usual.

That single crochet will count as the first one of round 17, insert the stitch marker in that stitch.

You will continue with the same yarn color (C1), now crocheting around both legs in a big round.
Rnd17: sc in next 17 sts, then continue to the next leg, sc in next 18 sts [36]
    Rnd18-22: sc around [36]
    FO. Cut the yarn.

  3. Make the skirt and attach it to the legs

    Amigurumi crochet doll free pattern

Next for this crochet doll free pattern, you will make the skirt.
Start with C2. Then you will crochet the bottom part of the dress (skirt) separately. After that, you will attach it to the doll’s waist, the part that’s is already made with C1.

Ch 36, join the last ch to the first ch with a sl st, forming a ring, but make sure it’s not twisted.
Rnd1: sc in third loop of each ch around [36]
    Rnd2: (inc) 36 times [72]
    Rnd3-7: sc around [72]
    FO. Cut the yarn.

Rnd8: In this round, you will overlap the legs piece with the skirt, aligning the top of both pieces on the waistline. Still working with C2, attach both the last round of the torso and the first round of the skirt together.
Next, insert the hook in both loops of any stitch of the skirt in the foundation chain, and into booth loops of the first stitch of round 7, in the leg piece, at the same time.
Yarn over, pull through all four loops, complete a single crochet as usual. As a result, that stitch will be the first stitch of round 8, place the stitch marker in it.  Repeat the process with the remaining stitches [36]

    Rnd9-12: sc around [36]
Rnd13: (dec, sc in next 10 sts) 3 times [33]
Rnd14: (dec, sc in next 9 sts) 3 times [30]
Rnd15: (dec, sc in next 8 sts) 3 times [27]
Rnd16: (dec, sc in next 7 sts) 3 times [24]

Continue to next step, no need to cut the yarn.

  4. Attach the arms

    Amigurumi crochet doll free pattern

Rnd17: It’s time to attach the arms to the body. First, you will squish the top of the arms flat and attach them to each shoulder, making sure they are centered on the sides.
Next, leave 7 stitches between the arms at the back of the doll and 7 stitches at the front.
Now, with the hook still attached to the round you have been working on the body, insert it through the first set of two stitches of the arm from the outside and in the next stitch of the body, yarn over, pull through all 6 loops.
Lastly, complete the single crochet as usual. Repeat the process with the 4 remaining sets of two stitches of the arm. Do the same with the other arm [24]

Rnd18: (dec, sc in next 6 sts) 3 times [21]
Rnd19: (dec, sc in next 5 sts) 3 times [18]
Rnd20: (dec, sc in next 4 sts) 3 times [15]
FO. Cut the yarn. Next, you will crochet the head for the crochet doll free pattern.

  5. Crochet the head and place the eyes

    Amigurumi crochet doll free pattern

Now you will attach C3 to blo of any stitch on round 20 and start the neck and the head.
Rnd21: sl st in blo around [15]
Rnd22: sc around in blo [15]
    Rnd23: sc around  [15]
    Rnd24: (inc) 15 times [30]
Rnd25: (inc, sc in next 5 sts) 6 times [36]
Rnd26: (inc, sc in next 6 sts) 6 times [42]
    Rnd27-41: sc around [42]

Now it is a good time to place the eyes on the crochet doll free pattern. First, you will pick the side that will be the front of the doll and place the eyes between rounds 33 and 34, 10 stitches apart.
Most importantly, make sure the eyes are centered on the face. To do that, squeeze the head piece flat, as that will help you to determine the correct placement for them.

Rnd42: (dec, sc in next 5 sts) 6 times [36]
Rnd43: (dec, sc in next 4 sts) 6 times [30]
Rnd44: (dec, sc in next 3 sts) 6 times [24]
Rnd45: (dec, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times [18]
Rnd46: (dec, sc in next st) 6 times [12]
    Rnd47: (dec) 6 times [6]
    FO. Cut the yarn.

  6. Embroider the nose

    Amigurumi crochet doll free pattern

Next, with a strand of the skin color yarn and the yarn needle, embroider the nose in the center of the face, one round below the eyes.

First, insert the hook in one stitch, skip two stitches and draw it out. Then repeat 5 times, or more, if you want a bigger nose. Next, you will make the hair for the crochet doll free pattern.

  7. Make the wig (C4) and attach to the head

    Crochet Amigurumi Doll

For this step, you will crochet a wig cap and sew it on to the head. Then you will make the piggy tails separately and attach them to the sides of the head.

    Rnd1: 6 sc in a mr
    Rnd2: (inc) 6 times [12]
Rnd3: (inc, sc in next st) 6 times [18]
Rnd4: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times [24]
Rnd5: (inc, sc in next 3 sts) 6 times [30]
Rnd6: (inc, sc in next 4 sts) 6 times [36]
Rnd7: (inc, sc in next 5 sts) 6 times [42]
    Rnd8-16: sc around [42]
FO. Leave a long tail and use it to sew the cap on to the head.

For the cap, I used a strand of the same Homespun yarn to sew it on to the head. But it may break apart while sewing if you don’t pull it through very carefully.

So if you don’t feel comfortable using it, use a stronger crochet thread or yarn instead. Also, sewing pins may be helpful to secure the cap in place while you sew it on.

  8. Make the piggy tails (make 2)

yarn wrapped in a cardboard rectangle

Wrap the hair yarn (C4) 40 times around the 7” cardboard.

Cut the bottom of the wrapped yarn with sharp scissors.

  9. Tie both piggy tails in the middle

two bunches of yarn for doll hair

Use a 17” strand of the same yarn to tie that bunch in the middle.
Next, you will attach the hair on to the head for the crochet doll free pattern.

  10. Attach the piggy tails to the head

    Amigurumi crochet doll free pattern

Now, with the two ends of the strand of yarn you used for the knot and a yarn needle, attach both piggy tails on to the head, one on each side.

For that, sewing pins may be helpful to determine the placement of the piggy tails.

Lastly, trim them and style them by wrapping a strand of red yarn around the base of the piggy tails. FO and weaving in the ends. The crochet doll free pattern is all done.
